  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NexTo eXtreme ND-2700

is that correct that the nexto cannot even back up single 8GB card without the battery failing?

Tom, we've never had the Nexto ND2700 battery go down on us even during a full day of shooting (one camera) - multiple cards (can't say for sure how many). It only takes 4 minutes or so to download and verify an 8GB card then the machine kindly shuts itself off. It's been a wonderful tool for us.

USB faster - is that right?

for the ND27xx series.. the way to go is SATA2 interface. Its smokes USB . There is NO firewire interface on the ND2700 series.

USB2? = really slow in comparison, especially when the HCSD/CF cards etc have a much higher effective data rate between the card and the NEXTODI SATA2 interface in the ND27xx. This works fine also with USB requirements such as the HMC150 for example (card offload)..[ will stand corrected.]

Makes it rather unusable for the HVX200 guys (like me) as it really cant be used in camera host mode and wont do verification.

Config for the ND2700 we used for RED is:
•*express34 SATA interface card & macbookpro
• ND270- with SAMSUNG 500GB SATA2 ddm
• card to ND2700 and offload using finder drag and drop. (brainless)
• ND2700 to macbookpro etc as direct attached through SATA buss.

smoking data rates of 70MB/sec+

THe SATA2 at 3Gbs interface on the ND2700 / ND2725 is the way to go if you don't have a PAnasonic HVX-200 etc camera and dont want to offload from the camera.

For RED this is not a concern.

THe advertising blurb on the Nextodi /en web site is misleading (incorrect?) for Panasonic HVX-200 P2 users for ND2700 and ND2725 (yeah even a picture of HVX-200) . The ND2525 is the one that is used for the 1394host mode when offloading off directly the HVX camera and VERIFICATION is performed. And as we all know the NEXTODI ND2525 does not support a P2 PCMIA slot or even that interface used by P2.

Seems also this way for the ND2700 (not sure of the ND2725 except for autonimous card offload support of support SxS cards).

NEXTODI 27xxx: (no FW400) For P2/HVX I dont believe verification is performed by the PANNY HVX-200 camera through the USB (I'll stand corrected - and definately no HOST mode for usb). [ again no firewire in this ND27xx box.]

ND2700/ND2725 use a SATA express34 or an el cheapo SATA HBA in a x1 slot.. if you have any PCIE slots left! (loL!)

Incorrect.

With the second battery attached one can backup more than 10 8GB CFs onto the Nexto 2525. The second battery is as big as a medium finger and has a nice holster on the Nexto's leather cover.

Only with the internal battery, if I recall correctly, more than 5 Cfs can be backuped

Awesome. I just ordered one.

So just to continue to show my paranoid streak, has anyone EVER had a problem with verified data not actually being there, or with a Nexto failing in any way? Being able to back up to these devices seems too good to be true, without having to bust out my stupid laptop all the time on remote shoots.

my sentiments exactly. We've had the device for a number of months and have never had a problem file. It also has USB to go such that you can make a back-up of the Nexto drive to another drive in the field automatically.

I can fully understand your paranoia considering your 8 hour once-in-a-lifetime beautiful shots.

I got my nextro extreme, but it definitely needs a little case to go with it. you need to be able to store the chargers and cables and stuff. i grabbed a Lowepro Edit 110. it's a little bit overkill, but it will keep the nexto very secure from bumps and weather.

Hi Tom thats interesting that you didn't get a case with it. THe ones we get here in Hong Kong ship in the box with
  • leather case that accomodated the external battery
  • an external battery (as well as the inbuilt one)
  • a eSATA cable
  • small screwdriver
  • etc

Same with the older nd2525 I bought ages back.

yes i got the leather case, but where are you going to put the ac and dc chargers, the usb cable, etc? i'm probably just nit-picking, but i like to keep stuff organized in its own cases.

HI Tom, Ah! sorry point well taken. I misunderstood your concern.:waaa:

YEs indeed I use one of those nice zipper bags you get on thse business class flights that has all those useless stuff you never use. THese small bags are excellent for power supplies and leads.

agree.

I just received an ND2700 today and it does not recognize my 16GB cards, but it does work with my 8 GB cards. When I plug in a 16GB card, I get an error message that reads "UNSUPPORTED CF".

Did you all have to update your firmware for the RED 16GB CF's?

We just checked our firmware and we are running v1.06, which is the latest according to the website. It just does not like these 16GB cards.

Also, we received our RED 16GB cards around Jan 14th. I am not sure if they changed design at some point, but I had not heard anything about that.

I have never had any issues with the Nexto but I don't have any 16gig cards, just 8's. I have three 8's and have never been in a pinch with the download time.

Just wanted to follow up and say we got these working by re-formatting the 16GB's in camera. None of us have any idea why this worked, but we're not complaining.

Happy that worked out for you. We've not had any problems with 16GB cards and the Nexto - very happy with it to date.
