  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RELEASED: REDCINE BETA (v3.1.8)

Honestly, with the workflow I tend to use most often I don't use REDCINE much to transcode. However, I absolutely love it as a method of one light CC's on set and many DP's I've worked with love to come over at lunch and see a basic grade on their days work so far. REDCINE has helped put many producers at ease that were worried about an all data centric acquisition camera and for that alone, I love it! Whatever this small problem is, its easy to figure out that it is not going to effect the final output and therefore I can just work around it.
Just wanted to bring this bug to the attention of the RED team to help further the development of a quality tool in the toolkit!

Mike I'm sure you're absolutely right about it being a good preview tool on set, to keep producers/ directors relaxed on the day. It's not the fastest for cranking out rushes, unless things have changed. It was always promoted as THE post / transcoding tool for this camera (for the masses). And as such, it's a really bad advertisement for Red Digital Cinema, IMHO.

Since I haven't shot much anamorphic, yet, I find that Redcine is my go-to program for post. The only time I used Red alert/ redrushes is when sound was recorded to camera. Red alert is just too time consuming and tedious.

Mark, is that purple pixel issue only with Redcine? If so, is that with all output settings? I haven't had that issue yet.

It was back in April, was repeatable, and was only there on Standard debayer setting in Redcine (which was the only practical one for me at the time). That wasn't a timelapse shot, by the way. It was on many shots... sometimes you had to look closer to see it. I never got a response about it on the forum, as far as I know. I'm very sorry to see that kind of problem is still there as it makes the software hopeless for a reliable transcode. Sorry to be so negative.

I see each tool that RED provides as a benefit for me to use in the right scenario. I agree that REDCINE is not my favorite tool for pumping out rushes, however, that's why REDRUSHES is here.
This would be my only criticism and suggestion to improve the tools to be more integrated as I believe they should,

1. Allow the RED Camera to import .rcc Look files from REDCINE (maybe not possible) but would be nice.

2. Allow REDRUSHES to use .rcc, and .rsx files from REDCINE and REDALERT. Or, alternatively, just make the COLOR adjustments in REDCINE translate to .rsx files instead of .rcc and get rid of .rcc all together. (Again, may not be possible but would make some sense in my limited view of RED's future software development). Maybe .rcc will play nice with the next cameras, don't know, can't read the future, but I think it must be there for a reason?

I only use REDALERT to generate rsx files for REDRUSHES at the moment. But, I would much rather use REDCINE to do my simple one light grades and generate rcc files for REDRUSHES automatically like REDALERT does. Simply because I use REDCINE more on set for playback/preview purposes. Having to jump into REDALERT to generate the same looks I've already created in REDCINE is just double the work and not efficient. Obviously, I am a REDCINE fan and hence a Scratch fan as well. I like organizing my clips, stacking them in the Library with different looks etc. REDALERT simply doesn't have the same options as REDCINE and is not efficient for me on set. Oh, also, when you get around to it, build 18 anamorphic support in REDCINE would be great! Did I mention that before here :-)

Mark, I don't think its as drastic a situation to say "fix it or get rid of it" cause some of us actually use this tool quite a bit regardless of its "Beta" ways at times. I'm sure the RED team is well aware of these issues and will get to them in due time. We have no clue (when I say we I mean me of course) how difficult these things are or where they lie in the list of a million things to do. If you don't expect anything else than what you have in front of you right now you can never be let down.

I have to say that creating looks in Redcine and then having to go into Red Alert and manually plug them in sucks. I also agree that importing the redcine rcc files into Redrushes would be awesome. That way you could do your looks in redcine and just plug them into redrushes. But instead of just making rcc files transferrable to redrushes, lets also make them uploadable into the camera.

If it ain't reliable, it ain't useable, for anything serious at least.
I'm basing this on my own experience, and time lost. I get that it's good for some things (like previewing on set).
I don't get these posts that defend Redcine, though. It does no-one any good.
Cripple the transcoding, so people don't get screwed, and run around town bad-mouthing Red. I just don't see how it's worth it for the company.
Once again, sorry to rain on the "new version released" parade.
That's my piece said.

I get what your saying Mark. I'm not fighting you here, just saying, use what you have for what it does well.
For me, REDRUSHES is my transcode software, REDCINE my preview software and REDALERT my .rsx creation software. Until things are otherwise its kind of mute point. Cheers :-)

Same garbled TIFFs on my iMac under bootcamp unfortunately. Will see if QT works under OSX next..

I'm with you on everything, Mike.
I'm sounding a little harsh just from remembering the bad times when I last tried using Redcine for what it's meant to do, and can't stand seeing other people falling into the same problems with it a year later, having a nightmare, and running around saying "the red Post-Production software sucks, cost me $$$, etc. It does you, me, and every Red Owner a disservice, and therefore we really are better off seeing it either exterminated, or truly fixed.
It's been a year and a half... come on, team!

Easter egg???

Easter egg???

Anyone else happen to notice in the PC version... its not there in the Mac version...

I have noticed the the red timecode since updating. Is this dropped frames? What?

Want that egg....

I find it strange the number of people who report success/failure with RC. Why isn't it stable for all yet?

Thank you for these added features! (and for the continued updates at no charge.)

Your hard work is much appreciated.

You guys rock!

I still don't have a windows transcoding tool that works, only OSX Redcine can export TIFFs, QTs no, but frankly its windows that needs it for us small fry and our clients.
Would I pay for something that doesn't work, no I wouldn't. Would I buy into a proprietory format without such tools, no I wouldn't.
Efforts to improve Redcine are appreciated, but I think its time for a rethink frankly cos its getting boring now..

I'm with ronx : I keep asking whenever I post something here to have at least the QT redcode for PC, come on, more than 1 year has passed now... That's the biggest Red postproduction drawback : no real PC support to easily batch convert R3D files to QT... and I don't even talk about sound here...

Sorry, I haven't experienced this as I'm running mostly Mac. I hear ya, though.

I'm on a mac. I use RC without issues. I love the RC experience. (Yes, I know there are other mac users who DO HAVE RC issues)

I don't understand how people can use a PC, especially in regards to film/video. It's a preference I know and I can respect that. Price shouldn't be the factor - you end up paying for those PC headaches in the long run.

So no one knows anything concerning the red timecode? I don't think it's dropped frames as the there aren't any in the footage. Perhaps it's related to audio and audio clipping?

Anyone?
