  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Clip on Mattebox for lightweight configuration

We have a couple in our LA Rental inventory. They seem sturdy & weigh nothing. They're also a bit limited, but what do you expect out of a lightweight clip-on?

Defoe is great and does alot of custom work.
He use to work with CEI in designing all those color taps for arri's
Back in the day.

If you want a clip on in 4x5 with a rotating pola stage
That clips in Cooke s4 and other large lenses these are a different design
Then an LMB5

How much is the Defoe Clip-On Matte Box? Can't find price on that site. I need something like this for use with my Jib.

yeah but you would also have to buy a rotating pola tray, that would reduce your number of filters and cost as much as another LMB5

2x the price.

they are very different beasts. Defoe is not sleek but it is very light weight and well thought out. Different tool for a different job.

Thanks for the feedback...I would like to know even small options, ie lmb-3...anyone have one of these laying around they would like to get rid of?

Here's a small option:

Cokin Z-Pro Filter Holder

Can allegedly take 4x5.65s. I've been thinking this could be a smart solution for lightweight, handheld work.

They also have a more complete clipon mattebox: Z360

I've never used a Cokin product, but they are popular in the stills world.

You should look into the MMB-1. 2 stage with rotary tray and clamp on system coming soon.

I am getting this matte box regardless...waiting for the version to come in that has top loading filter trays vs the current gen one that is side loading only.

Has any one experiences with the Coking filter-holder / Mattebox?

I used some Cokins in the 1980s, and the holders would never last very long.

But looking at their website, it seems that they are now also catering for the motion picutre world, with 4x4 and 4x5.6" glass filters.

Just was operating on feature that used these Dafoe Clamp-On Boxes. I like them very much! The show was primarily handheld, using Superspeeds. Had to use inserts to clamp on, but they are very strong and durable. Loved the 4.5" Round Pola stage.
The eyebrow is very small in comparison to other options, but we made extensions out of showcard and velcro that worked fine. IMHO they are far more sturdy than the LMB5 which I always bristled at how they always came apart on me. This is a great product, and would be one I considered purchasing if I was in that kind of mood.
Give em a try, you will dig em.
