OK, I should be sending this e-mail to the Red Sales Team ... maybe I will ... but I don't want to bug them right now ... I'd rather bug the Red Community at large instead. I want a Red but I don't have much money ... I want a camera for indie feature film making ... would an Epic X be good for this application? Can I purchase the Epic X this way ... can I buy a Red One (body only) for $17,500 ... the camera stays in your shop as a trade in for an Epic X .... once my "number" comes up ... you mark my Red One "executed" and bill me for the Epic X. I send the balance Red sends me the Epic X. This way I save all the return hassles etc. and customs duties etc. (Canada). I get my Epic X and can start trying to raise the money to make it useful. As a businessman what's wrong with this strategy ... I am not a businessman, (did I mention, I have no money?)

Or better yet .... let's skip all the Red One stuff ... I just send $16,000 and get put in line for an Epic X ...give me Red pseudo serial number 5500 or something ....

Also, a question for Red Management ... Did you ever study the Osborne Computer Company and the problems resulting from "pre-announcing " products?

I recognize that Red is non-traditional and I think that that's fantastic!

Or a loan or rentals... because it's not just 17,500- that's just the price of admission. Figure on spending double triple or even quadruple that for your lenses, tripod, matte box, follow focus, sound gear, monitor, EVF, etc.

Sorry, we do not store RED ONEs here. You physically would need to take delivery if you want to go down that path.

Thanks, BC

You need to take delivery of the Red One to get the Epic X -- but if you really don't want to use it... And don't want to accessorize it ... Maybe you could offer it as an inexpensive backup body to productions, or something.

It seems to me that this is exactly why RED is offering the Epic X "incentive" configuration:

Buy the available product now and get a huge discount on the new product & accessories when they are released.

You get to use a Red One for essentially no cost until Epic X is ready, as well as giving you to opportunity to generate income (or not, your choice).

This would seem better that letting $16,000 sit on account for 9 months.

I remember the Osbourne fiasco, it was a essentially a totally new platform and components with no upgrade path from the existing equipment.

How 'bout you purchase the Red One body and rent it out, making some money off of it in the mean time.

Of course you should........
Buy a RedOne, stick it in a sealed case and hire it out as a backup camera for $100/day, 4 day week. I'd say with zero effort, a rental house or other would mind it for you at this rate. If it's used, the hire is $200/day, 4 day week. you'd pay it off & make 10K off it in a year before you traded it in for an Epic.
