I'm doing my first Red job on FCP. I'm using Red Rushes to transcode the footage to ProRes 422. It's importing the files just fine, but the transcoded footage is noticeably more blown out and over-exposed than the original 2K proxies. I have the Debayer set to HalfRes Standard. One of our other editors just did his first Red job on that same system using the same settings and didn't have any noticeable changes in the footage.

Any ideas as to what is causing this? It wouldn't bother me if there's a way to just take my selects from my EDL to the color-correction session and be able to go back to the original Red footage. Is the Monkey Extract what I would nee to do this?

Thanks in advance,
Eddie

What are your colorspace and gamma settings?
For doing offline files I tend to use redspace or camrgb colorspace & rec709 gamma

If you have the gamma setting to Redspace then switching to REC709 will bring back the highs lower, but since REC709 will look more dull by the default and if the DP liked how redspace looked, then you will have adjust the clips in REDAlert!.

In REDAlert!, you can keep the Redspace setting but adjust the exposure to bring it down.
As soon as you open the clip in REDAlert!, RSX is automatically created, then when you open it in REDRush, you can select the "Look Source" as RSX, so REDRush look at the RSX that was created when you adjust the clip with REDAlert!.

Keep in mind that not all parameters in REDAlert! are transferred in RSX file at this point (I believe) like the curve is not working, so don't use the curve to adjust it.

Others that know which parameters are working, please chime in.

Edit:
I forgot to mention but ClipFinder is easier solution when you use with REDAlert! (even without). When you open up clips directly or exported XML from FCP (so you can open only the clips you edited with), then list show with preview (no previews in REDRush), and by double clicking it opens in REDAlert!. Grade it with REDAlert! that will create the RSX, when you go back to the ClipFinder, it indicates if that clip has RSX or not. Then you can go into the quick render to do the same job you can do in REDRush.

It's in the whitepaper: curves, color- and gamma-space, denoiser and OLPF-compensation are not transferred. The rest is, and I can confirm that.

I second Clipfinder, it's very helpful (and deserves our donations).

hmm - havnt read white paper - but just rendered 20 clips - look source : set to RSX file - From RED Alert- where I changed gamma & color space to REC 709. the tests from RED Rushes showed that it did transfer gamma and color...

Yes – in REDrushes. But not in L&T.
