Hello,

I'm testing FCP's native r3d support, although it seems to work well, I've come to find, to my great dismay, that a number of clips are not transfered in their entirety.

My workflow : Log & Transfer of native .r3d files into FCP 6.0.5 everything has been updated a few days ago (probably Jan. 19th). Machine is a MacPro 2 x quadcore 3 GHz with 4 GB ram. Machine is working wonderfully. I've been playing around in Color with native .r3d files, works great, but I wanted to do a workflow test coming from FCP and some clips are cut. When I open the QT proxies generated by the camera, the file is whole.

Any ideas, suggestions, ways to solve this problem ?

Cheers,
Damien

Damien, can you provide a little more information...

Not transferred from where to where? FCP to Color?
Are the clips loaded into the L&T interface in their entirety?
Do they ingest from L&T into the FCP browser in their entirety?
When you drop them on the timeline are they complete?

Thanks,

Craig

Hi Reinhart,

I imported an entire Red drive worth of clips (20 or so), with Log & Transfer in native format. The proxies were created and imported into my FCP project. I then dropped them all on my timeline and noticed a few clips were very short. When playing them, they stopped before the end. When double clicking on them I only have a small portion of the clip. That is how they were imported. When I look at the QT proxy from the camera, the clip is whole.

If I import the .r3d file directly into Color, it is whole also. The problem is in the Log & Transfer in FCP. Some clips are not whole.

Now, this was at the office, the clips were imported from a HD where the clips of a whole feature were saved to. I copied one of the offending clips to my MacBookPro and took it home. I just tested importing (Log and Transfer) this clip alone on this computer, and this time it is whole. I can't however import clips one by one on a feature. The problem seems to only appear when importing numerous clips.

I will be doing some more testing when I can. In the meantime I have to do some testing with Color, to see how that works. If Color works well, I'll then need to find the best way to get there. The film will be edited in FCP with ProRes files rendered through Redline.

Damien

This is also the case in my experience.

It seems to happen intermittantly, i.e. it is not a consistently repeatable bug.
However, if you don't touch the computer at all while it is transcoding, then it seems ok. However, I've pursued other workflows like Clip Finder, as they are a bit more reliable.

Hi Nils and Reinhart,

So, I did another little test today. In the Log & Transfer window, the clip is whole. I gave it a new name and imported it again, this time the clip was whole in FCP. So indeed this is not consistant. But I noticed I have a number of other clips which are also not whole, so when batch transfering some clips, for some odd reason, are being cut.

This is quite annoying. Like I said, one cannot import clips one by one, or go and check afterwards if they are all whole and reimport the ones that are not.

I guess I'll have to check-out Clip Finder, while we wait for Red and/or Apple to find a solution to this.

Cheers,
Damien
