  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

If you have an iPhone..

Digital Clapper. Very Cool. How do you get it to make a loud clap sound so you can sync with audio? Is it reliable for that purpose?

If I was a post guy and I logged material that used this, I would call you up and yell at you.

I'm not convinced the sound is perfectly synced with the visual of the clap.

Good point- I think it's worth testing out though. This thing is way more user friendly than camera tape and a sharpie. Automatic logs- gotta love that.

Just out of curiosity why?

the iPhone OS is a threaded OS, so there is no guarantee that audio samples triggered or graphic elements rendered are done so at a specific point in time, which is the #1 duty of an electronic slate. if your just using it for notation, knock yourself out, although I think a lot of people on set would either be pissed or amused that your futzing with your phone when you could easily enough have someone with dry erase marker and a real slate on hand.

It does not show frame accurate numbers, just approximations. The audible cue is not going to be loud enough to be of practical use, especially when you could have picked up a $.05 set of wood blocks and done a much better job. You just saved yourself $50 or whatever it is to rent a real TC slate for the day, but then cost the editor unknown number of hours second guessing the synch and double checking alignment.

It is a simulator, sort of a cool toy, but it is certainly not an electronic slate.

as opposed to no slate?

The audio clap is not loud enough for sure, but it could come in useful at times.

I can't think of an instance when these iPhone apps would be as/more useful than someone just sticking their hands in front of the lens and clapping them together. At the very least, the sound will be loud enough that you'll be able to see it in an audio waveform when syncing dailies. The fact that the timecode display isn't locked to any stable reference clock (notice the "split" frame count display on some of the frames in that comparison video that Sanjin posted), nor can you jam sync it to a device that's recording the same timecode, makes these nothing more than a pure novelty apps.

Can't wait for pCam to come out for the iPhone.

ditto, sound/sync playback from the iphone would be a great feature!

Take your song, put it in a video timeline, burn in timecode nice and big on the screen, output it for iPhone video, play back from the iphone = instant music video sync slate. Put a wireless transmitter on it for more portability.

All i want is Sunpath.
and as for the slate, just have the sound dpt bring it in.

Look up focalware, it has all the functionality of Sunpath and more.

iSlate is not perfect but it saved my ass on Saturday...
