  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

4K Challenge - 72hr RED Film Competition

Hey everyone, just to be clear. You must export and upload 1280x720 (720p) to Vuze.
However, Vuze is having a few technical problems. Don't worry, because of this delay you will have the rest of the day today to upload your submission to Vuze. No one will be penalized due to this temporary issue.
I know you guys have worked extremely hard and this can be frustrating but get some rest and try uploading again later today.
Thanks for your efforts and everything should be back online soon.

does that mean midnight?

Meryem....

You're ruining my fun with that up-beat post of yours.

...And the render just finished and it looks like we have a gamma issue of some sort. Grrr.... Now to troubleshoot.

Just call me buzz kill...

I was having substantial gamma issues as well, just mucking around with a bit of the footage using RedAlert and FCP. Frustrating.

The post process still has, shall we say, issues. But I never tire of reviewing footage for the first time and seeing the amazing images that RED cameras are capable of producing...

I finally solved my Premiere issue (with another three hours of trial and error). For whatever reason, starting with a Premiere title sequence or a JPG instead of video freezes Adobe Encoder, and ending with a JPG (like, oh, you know the one with the sponser logos that is mandatory to qualify :)) causes the same freeze, at the end of the render, which is extra fun.

Rendering any of these inserts alone is no problem; it only seems to be when they are part of a bigger sequence that things go awry. Anyhow, I finally discovered that running those same bits over video instead of on their own enables the render to proceed... so I finished, and launched Vuze just in time (to discover that it's down :)).

Oh well - I could definitely use some sleep about now!

Congrats to everyone else who participated - I can't wait to see all the films!

Best,
Tim

Guys, the Native workflow worked very well. Log and transfered, edited (albeit with a bit of choppy playback, but manageable for now), exported to Color, color corrected with R3D files, sent back to FCP with uncompressed 10 bit, rendered some titles, exported out to 720P and DVD and we're really happy with the results. We weren't seeing gamma issues between Color and FCP.

Color needs some more tweaking, as there seems to be some bugs with Red Room, but overall the basic concept is there and it was a joy to be working on the Raw files like that.

We had a blast this weekend! Thanks to everyone that took part, and thanks Mike and Darren for getting this going.

I'm very tired right now! I just did 24 hours straight with Steve in the edit room as we cut and CC'd. We ran into a few bugs as he stated above but it worked well and we are very pleased. As we did the video edit, our director and producer did the sound mix so by about 5:30A we were able to mate it all together. All I can say is wow...what a team! Thank you everyone who worked so hard on this. Steve, Ron, Zac, Mark, Ryan, Kevin and the truly incredible cast. I'm blown away!
And congratulations to every team that participated. This is what we do!

Hello everyone,

Vuze is back online after technical difficulties. Your submission deadline will still be extended to midnight PST because of these issues outside our control.

Thank you and I can't wait to view your submissions!

Ok guys, I've slept few hours and now I feel better. It's been a wonderful experience.
I want to thank my fantastic crew: my beautiful partner Giulia Brazzale with her fantastic ideas and stories, Alvise Tedesco for the beautiful photography, Ugo Perazzini for the incredible help with grip, camera and everything, Paolo Zaupa for the sound and support, Dario Leone and Jessica Resteghini, our talented actors and Valerio Guadagno for the amazing set design. Thanks a lot.
Ciao Alvise!

has anyone uploaded to Vuze? Or is that for Mike and the other guys running this thing? Vuze seems to be up right now...

If anyone has any links to postings, I'd love to see some stuff.

As for Vuze, is there going to be a separate space for the 4K Challenge films? Is there going to be a way for people to vote on the films or is it just the judges?

Good luck everyone. We had a blast doing our film. Didn't turn out quite how we had planned, but then again after as many drinks as we had on Friday night, I think we came up with something pretty funny. I wish I could've done more with the lighting, but with no real crew and only a couple of lights we did our best...damn these winter days in New York are short...

We have the channel built and ready to go on Vuze. Here is how its going to work. After everyone has uploaded their films (please send me an email with the web link or the name of your film so i know its there) we will bucket all the submissions into the 4K Challenge Channel on Vuze. Once they are all in the channel which should be by tomorrow afternoon by the latest, you can give a thumbs up or down on anyones content and also leave feedback/make comments on Vuze. Of course, you may make comments on each others work here as well.
By tomorrow morning, I am going to list all the submissions by name here to make sure everyone's submission is accounted for. Please contact me immediately if you do not see your submission on that list or in the 4K Challenge channel on Vuze @ mike@vuze.com

Its really important that you keep your film named correctly for us to find your entry to bucket it into the 4K Challenge channel. Again it would go like this,
4KChallenge - Title of your film - MBurton
(4KChallenge - Title of your film - First initial and last name)

Also, I will post and email each of you an updated link directly to the 4KChallenge channel on Vuze when its live later tonight.

Thank you everyone, and if you have any questions please ask before midnight tonight.

I can't wait to see the shorts. I have been doing the DVXuser fests since it started with either my own or DPing someone else's and I'm really glad it may catch on here. I wished I wasn't shooting last weekend and could compete but next time I guess. Good luck to everyone.

David, Steve, good stuff.

"Choke on this, bitch ♥ Toaster" Hehe...

Steve, was the aspect ratio intentional? Just thought I would ask...

Jeff, it was a blunder on my part. The giveaway is at the end with the Red logo. This should have been 2:1, letterboxed inside the 1280x720P. Only one shot to upload it though and I was running on fumes at that point. Doh!
