  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

the terminal part 2

I like it a lot. Very nice muted look and great effects. I felt the action could have been covered a little better and the editing tighter but I'm an editor. For just two guys and a couple lights and a few actors, it looks great! Well done. Will there be more?

I'd love to hear any comments on the edit you can provide, your expertise and opinions are extremely welcome.

Yeah, we were a wee bit handcuffed for coverage at certain moments in the combat scene.

Thanks in advance for any comments you may provide in the future

please any constructive criticism is very welcome we are doing these small projects to refine are skills it seems any project that we do should be a tighter edit, so please be more specific. I feel that Matt did an amazing job with the edit and the color grade but when you are in the project it is very hard to have a critical eye. So once again and comments would be great. help us get better at are craft.

I was waiting on the next one of these shorts. Really liked the effect and the graphics on the window and computer. The fight felt a little wide at points, like the shots should have been a little tighter. But it still looked very good and really shows that all you need is a couple people that know what filmmaking is to pull something off that looks good.

Hey Guys! Okay, just watched it again a second time. I think everything leading up to the fight looks great. I would have to say the fight is where the edit slips a bit IMHO. There is a shot 2min 20secs in that is out of focus and stays on screen too long. I would either lose or trim that shot and the shot before it as the guys in a two shot go out of focus as well. It makes the fight look slower than it has to be. I like using out of focus shots too at some points in the edit but those seemed to linger a bit long. Also, and i don't know if you have this or not but in the wide shots of the fight I would consider chopping it a bit more and using whatever coverage you have specifically the shot that extends from 2min32secs to 2min37secs. Don't know if you have more close ups that would work with your continuity at that time but I think its a valid choice if you have it to work with. Like when the dissapearing guy hits the wall is a good moment to cut in closer and really feel that THUD and see his pain, angst whatever the emotion is. Lastly the guy choking at the end seems to be a little overdrawn and I would trim that a bit as well.
Sorry if this wasn't clear only to me but what happened with the cool dissapearing guy? Did the NSA agent kill him with the previous blow before he gets injected?
Also, maybe some more of a score during the fight could help intensify the battle.

I loved the VFX you guys did and the Color Correction is great!

Guys, I don't want this to sound harsh at all, I really liked your short especially knowing how small a team you used to create it! Great work! I wouldn't be wasting my time writing this right now if it wasn't worth the time to perfect. I think its almost there, just a few trims here and there, and some audio editing and its done! Then again, this is just my opinion and take it with a grain of salt. If you guys need any help in the future feel free to contact me.

Thanks

Thanks

Mike thank you so much for the response none of it was harsh at all we will try your suggestions, editing is one of those things that can almost never be to tight. I wish we had more coverage of the fight we felt that keeping it wide would keep it more real Matt was very inspired by some asian films that use wide's for fight scenes, we used all Nikon Lens and the fight was done mostly with a 15mm nikon light was changing so we had to move on, I wish we a whole day to shoot the fight not 30 min, I always feel that the story is lacking depth in the sense its too big of a story for film that is so short. But great fun to make and learned a hell of a lot. One thing I learned and its something that I always new but never took seriously is how important a good actor is, now I know why they get paid the big buck a good actor is worth every penny. Once again thanks for the response Mike.

That is what reduser is all about learning together and growing together I think that is was RED is all about as well the advancement of filmmaking in general. Thanks to all who have watched and commented.

Looks great. It really does. I definitely agree with everyone in complimenting the color and visual effects. I definitely see what Mike Burton is saying and agree to some extent, but much of the wideness in the fight actually doesn't totally bother me personally (especially after hearing your reasoning too). I think it's a cool and interesting choice, and I do see what you mean in terms of realism; things aren't exaggerated, which makes it feel like you could be standing right there watching them, keeping your distance. I get it. If I may ask, which Asian films inspired Matt for this? I'd love to check them out. I'm actually currently taking a class on East Asian cinema, so this is definitely a topic of interest.

I also can definitely see the places where that 15mm lens came in handy. What specifically were all the lenses in your set? I'm looking into getting a scarlet when it comes out, and I'm looking very seriously at purchasing some still glass for it (mostly for budget reasons). Since it sounds like you used a Nikon mount, I'd love to know which lenses you used and how you like them, if you'd recommend them, etc. Despite what many may say, I'm definitely convinced that one can get a pretty damn good picture from still lenses (and this video is evidence).

I know I'm being fairly long-winded here, but I'll stop soon, I promise. I just wanted to say that I also completely agree with your last statement above. I know that I'm learning so much from reduser, both from people like you who are posting their footage and from the people who are commenting and giving critiques and also from other discussions on the forum in general. Basically, I wanted to thank you for posting your footage in a forum like this and I want to thank everybody (like Mike in this thread) for posting their opinions based upon their expertise. I'm a film student here at USC and I'm sure I have a lot to learn, but I just wanted to make it clear that a great deal of my education on cinema right now comes from the people on this website. So thanks guys.

All the best.

-Michael

I think part 2 is a huge improvement over part 1.

Part 1 had a problem living up to the really cool intro you made.

Part 2 really got me hooked from the get go. then as mentioned it fades a bit with the fighting scene. one thing is the editing should be tighter some places another thing is the casting of the NSA agent, I am sorry to say this but when you´ve found 2 actors with the charisma and presence - the old businees man and the "jumper", the the nsa agent is too plain looking - kindda like an anti climax visually. - Also who are we hoping will win?- i was hoping jumper would win, i am not sure that was what you wanted me to do?

but all in all you guys are really talented and I can wait to see next part. And damned it looked good. Choice of lenses, lighting, grading and effects was awesome! I am a fan.

I agree with a lot that's been said. I didn't get a chance to watch the first part, so it's difficult to talk about plot lines and such as I assume this was a continuation and will be continued onward. What I can comment on, however, is how I was engaged.

The look of the location is great. It had me intrigued from the start. The lead actor I like a lot too - he has a great voice and fits the part very well. I'm intrigued by the "connection" thing and the on screen graphics with the Russian guy were convincing. That part felt just a tiny bit slow - there wasn't a sense of urgency. The effect of the guy teleporting was pulled off very well. Like most people have said, it's the fight scene where I get removed. I felt like some of the shots were composed in a way that didn't add drama and energy to the situation. Part of this is shooting in wide, which I now understand by your choices, but if you're going to stay wide like that, the fight choreography and capabilities and training of the actors needs to be exceptional. That said, it feels awkward. I was a little confused at the end - how a normal NSA agent could so easily take down someone who could teleport like that in hand to hand combat. The acting of the NSA guy was sub-par too. All those groans and moans and shaking - it just wasn't convincing.

For the most part, though, I thought it was well put together and enjoyable - somewhere a mix between Heroes and 24.
