  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

First off, I can't express the deep sense of satisfaction (and maybe arousal) I get using R3D's with the Red tab in Color. This rocks. However, after running some tests I have some questions:

1) When I render a "native" QT wrapped R3D with the sequence codec set to "REDCODE" the entire clip goes gray. Is FCP just not designed to do this? Is native editing possible Do I have to render in another codec (prores) if I want to see reasonable playback?

2) I'm using a Mac Pro 8-Core and even though everything else is working fine, the RedCode icon doesn't appear in the system preference window. Anyone else experience this? I'd really like to change my debayer quality. (already tried reinstalling the Red FCP Plugin)

3) I've been working up a table with transcode times for clients and had an interesting result that I wanted to bounce off someone else:
-Transcoding 10 seconds of Redcode36 4K 2:1 24fps to ProresHQ took 34 seconds and resulted in a QT file with a data rate of 202 mbits/s
-Transcoding 10 seconds of Redcode36 2K 2:1 120fps to ProresHQ took 60 seconds and resulted in a QT file with a data rate of 235 mbits/s

Is the discrepancy in transcode time just because of the frame rate difference (24 v 120)? I guess I thought the resize from 4k to 2k would slow things down more. Also, why would the 2k originated prores file have a higher data rate (202 v 235)?

I realize this is a lot of stuff to digest . . . but I would really appreciate any help/advice/ramblings on any of these questions.

The 2k is faster. It did 1200 frames in 60 seconds.

1200 4k frames, by your figures, would take just under 3 minutes.

Okay yeah, had a little brain fart yesterday, too long staring at render bars . . .

Anyone have have any feedback about this:

hi there,

I was just testing out the new workflow myself, by first following the RED workflow document they included in the release of the plugin for FCP.

1) in that workflow document is stated that, since you can't write any R3D files, your sequence should never be in REDcode, but in either prores-HQ or uncompressed. It should never be in redcode.

2) i was looking for exactly the same thing... i'll keep you posted (maybe it's also in that same workflow document)

just my two cents,

Bert claes

2) you should install the RED quicktime codec in order to get that preference icon
