Heavy codec errors caused by cold temperature??

Shortly before christmas the camera #1513 was rented out to a commercial production, shooting in 4K, 16:9, 25fps on build 17-3.4.1 recording to original RED 8GB CF cards. The camera had been performing the entire day without any problems, like the weeks and months before.

At the end of the day the camera was taken out for some exteriour shots, the temperature was about zero degrees celcius. During those few hours outside a increasing number of codec errors occured. It was not visible in the monitoring during the shot, but in the playback and in the original R3D-files. The original files had very heavy color patterns in single frames about every second, in the monitoring strange ghost images and even split screens occured. Please see still below (rendered with Redcine) and find one of the scenes under:

The amount of errors got worse from take to take.

At the end of the day the entire crew naturally got VERY upset and decided not to work with this camera any longer. They rented a different camera from another company for the next day (which was studio again) and that was it...

I was not able to reproduce any of the errors a few days later. Everything seemed to be just fine. This is scary. Has someone seen ever had similar experiences?

Please keep me updated. Thanks a lot.

Sebastian

P.S. I tried to file a tech support ticket, but I only got a message "server busy, try later" for serveral hours now. Anyone at Red, please let me know where to mail the log file to.

I may be totally off the mark, but someone told me about an experience they had with RED drives "skipping" during bumpy shots. I noticed that you recorded to the CF cards, but is this possible?

I've read a lot on this thread about some cold weather issues, but is there any truth to drives skipping?

We've had some serious codec errors as well (audio mostly) on a shoot with temperatures around freezing. The camera went completely bonkers during recording. We couldn't do anything about it, even when the camera was nice and warm the day after wards. Reinstalling the build did not help either. However our REDdrive had only 7% storage left. After we formatted the drive, everything was working fine again and have not had problems since. Might be worth trying to format those CF cards too, if you haven't already..?

My camera says "Media is too slow" for 8Gb cards and 4K, 16:9, 25fps on build 17-3.4.1.

Sebastian, our apologies that you had this problem, please contact RED technical support and request a new CF reader card. That recorded image pattern is almost certainly not a codec issue.

Feel free to contact me directly. The fault in footage shown here is usually indicative of a fault in the CF reader/writer.

So if I'm understanding this correctly you can't record 4k on the 8GB CF cards?

You can record 4K 2:1 REDCODE 36 at up to 25fps or 4K 16:9 REDCODE 28 at up to 25fps.

You cannot record 4K anything over 25fps or 4K 16:9 REDCODE 36 at all.

Look at the actual Manual on Page 28, there you will find the answer regarding which framerates and resolutions you can record on which media.... :)

Dear Sean and Stuart,
thanks for your answers. I was out of the country for a shoot, so it took me some days to get back on this.

With the new 16GB cards I have also received the new reader which is now swapped. The camera has been out on two jobs with that new reader and works without any problems. The scary part for me was, that the old reader worked as stabile just except for this one particular night.

Anyway let's hope the new reader has completly eliminated the problem. Therefore I don't see a reason for a ticket anymore. Would you agree here?

Thanks anyway,
Sebastian
