When you color correct in Color using the native L&T workflow, does Color have access to the entire original 4k image, or just a scaled down 2k version of it? Since from what I understand Color can only output 2k, not 4k, it seems like it shouldn't make much of a difference except for the situation where you need to reframe and zoom in on certain shots. In other words, if I have to blow up a shot by a significant amount, will I get the full 2k output resolution if I blow it up using the geometry room in Color, or do I have to do the reframing using a different tool first before I send it to Color if I want the highest quality possible from the original 4k file?

I Believe that Color is only ever seeing 2K frames so if you try to zoom way in in the geometry room it will not take that from the 4K and output pixel-for-pixel because it's doing a Half-High debayer, which is only 2K.

Having said that, it won't really do much good to reframe first because you want color to see the RAW file, so you will lose any previous zooming.

If you really need to punch in, you should do CC and export a 4K file from RedAlert or RedCine and then crop it down to 2K in After Effects or something, then you could probably open that in color to do some minor matching to the rest of your sequence.

Hope that makes sense.

I think it does access to the original image and scale down to output.

Blowing up x2 from 4K in 2K output whether you can get the full debayer or not, I think Graeme can answer.

It makes sense.

The output image looks very different from REDCINE and RED Alert.
The After Effects output is closer to REDCINE and RED Alert.

I agree with Kaku, would be interesting to hear Graeme about this.

Color Scaling

Color Scaling

Hi,
When Color scales down the image for 2K output does it scale down the 4K image with full debayering or 50% debayeing ?
Thks

Color does half debayer according to Graeme. If you need to reframe to 2k, do that with RC/Shake...

The fun part is that Color can actually read 4k, just not output it... as long as it doesn't come from RED.

In other words: The "full" Color r3d image is actually 2k.
(As a side-effect, 3k = 1.5k, but 2k = 2k)

As I understand I had to take the FCP XML to Shake or Red Cine , export to 2K and then do the grading for final out in Color....
