I'm wondering if anyone has made a proper support for RED's new 300mm Pro lens yet?

My ghetto support is working OK, but I'm looking for something better if it's out there. I haven't been ambitious enough to actually hit up the machine shop for a full-on support... yet. I'm thinking something similar to what Jacek (OptiTek) has come up with for the RED 18-85.

Not sure it really needs it. I didn't note an attachment point for a standard lens support.

Consider, Red Rock Micro lens support, to Zacuto 1" 15mm rods, to RED 15mm adapter, to RED universal adapter.

It needs it. It's a pretty heavy lens, and long too. Especially needs it in situations where additional forces will be applied to the lens and mount, such as vehicle mounting. Keep in mind that RED did not put a standard attachment point on their 18-85 either, in fact they allowed for no means of attaching anything.

I'm looking for something more than the RedRock support. No offense to Brian V. and the guys at RR, but I want something that can actually clamp on to the lens, not just something the lens rests on.

At this time, I've made my own, but it's not very elegant looking and not quite as functional as I would like. I was hoping that someone was working on a proper support for this lens. There are some good solutions out there for the 18-85 that showed up right away, but the 300mm seems to be lacking the attention it needs.

Jeff, why don't you ask Matt Duclos? He'll either set you up, or point you in the right direction with other products that may suit the application. He does offer a support product for the RED 18-85mm.

Just a thought...

OK, PM me with the inquiry.

Hello,
As much has I appreciate Jeff's endorsement the response to the 18-85 support has been a bit disappointing. And that lens really needs it.
After I was approached with a request to make another support for the 300mm I was a bit hesitant because I don't want to spent time and effort only to sell a handfull. That doesn't even satisfy the time spent on design.
I have the (pro 300mm):construction: design ready but don't want to be stuck with a pile of aluminum parts, I can't sell.
I need the community support on this. Please pm me with an inquiry and I'll make enough and some extra sets to satisfy the demand.

Hi Jacek,

The reason you did not sell a lot of 18-85 supports is because Red shipped less then 40 lens for the first 4 months. They are now shipping again, I got mine last week. I will be stopping by today to pick up the 18-85 support and it would have been nice to pick up the 300mm as well.

Warm up your lens projector I am bringing the 18-85.

same story- no interest

same story- no interest

Jacek,
Any news on the motor mount for the 18-85, I really like your support ring and handle, but need to finish the system.

The Heden motor bracket is the same story- I have the design but threre is a very little interest so It's on the back burner right now until I get enough orders.

That's very disappointing...I need the bracket asap.

There are readily available swing arm brackets that mount to a rod (15mm or 19mm) and hold a horizontal motor. Vertical motors mount directly to the rod.

Yes, that's a great one, available for purchase through Abel. Thanks! ;-)

in that case...

in that case...

I'll do it. Heden motor bracket intergrated with my support ring.

Greg, aren't you loving all this attention?

Thanks, actually have a couple, but they are 15mm.
I prefer to have the motor mounted directly to the lens though so its ready to go out of the case.

I just got my Opitek support and handle for my new 18-85 and it rocks. Good job on that one. I want that motor mount ASAP. As you can see from pics my 300mm is bummed out, what's up with that?

Hey Jacek,
Did you ever complete the motor bracket...really need one bad.

Thanks

Let's see how many in for it?

Hi Guys,
I've got a lot on my plate now(what else is new?) so these had to go on the back burner. Whoever is interested please get back to me @ jacek@optitek.org and I'll do a "group engineering project" out of it if there is enough interest...
Best, Jacek Zakowicz, optitek.org:thumbsup:

i will be wanting a lens support when my 18-85mm zoom finally arrives. i'm #405 so it could be a while. but that is why OptiTek haven't sold many lens supports because there aren't many 18-85mm zooms out there......YET!!!!
