New Article About Red One and Rentals

Interesting article and Point of view....

The Red One is a tool for story telling......if you have talent, you can make a great Movie/TV show/Short/music video/commercial with this camera at a never before seen price point!

That is good for most of us but probably not the best recipe for a rental house
to make tons of money.

Many of us are very happy with this camera and it's abilities at the current price point. If you purchased this camera to make tons of money....well good luck with that plan!:waaa:

I purchased the ticket and I'm taking the ride....it's a fantastic ride!:)

My 2 cents
Dave

We will see what the competitors will bring. Imagine Arri creates a D235. Don't you think that rentalhouses and DOPs will embrace such a camera more than a Red Epic? Probably won't happen and you'll be right...

Hans

And I would pay the price for that camera in a flash... always regretted I never got the 35mm version :w00t:

Eric I kinda have to agree with you, 3d is EVERYWHERE (my DLP I bought a year ago is 3D ready, all I have to do is buy the glasses) plus the technology is getting close for 3d technology without hte glasses (come on, look at CES thusfar, most new TV's are 3d ready, plus gaming monitors and LCD's are now down to 2ms responce times for 24" full HD and under $800. 3d is the future and it will be here faster than we know. With the NFL testing it, European channels looking to broacast in it, the adult entertainment industry will be all over it (considering the price point of 2 scarlets). Plus look at shows like top gear, who wouldn't want a vanquish "flying past" them?

In order to make 3D work won't it require 120Hz originated material playing at 120Hz? Will that require HDMI 2.0? And will that require YET another blu-ray player? Not to mention movies being released as "true 3D"? Plus it would require LCD glasses with some time of control device.

Man. Sounds complicated and expensive.

There are indeed alot of downward pressures on Red One rentals - all of which were quite foreseeable over a year ago.

One thing I do remind clients is thats it's not an Arri 435; it is a computer, and it probably will be surpassed (by Red Corp. or others) in the very near future. Therefore, I need to make back my investment quicker than the older business models would indicate.

If one runs a camera rental company, and have clients ask to rent the RED and everytime have to turn them away, those clients will become someone elses clients eventually, and that is bad for business.

Depends on what you mean by 120Hz originated material. So you can for example shoot at 30fps. With liquid crystal shutter glasses each eye alternates showing a single image to a respective eye for 1/60th of second. The refresh rate is 120hz only on the monitor. Normally stereo capable graphics cards (cheaper than ever) carry out left/right buffer swaps every 1/60th of a second. It used to be, the only really decent shutter glasses were Crystal Eyes, but were about $800.00 and about $200.00 for the infra red emitter to synch the glasses. There are now various firms providing slightly different types of LCD shutter glasses for less than $200.00. Nvidia is poised to release their own glasses and emitter, for gaming and movies. Viewsonic has just launched their 120Hz LCD monitor for less than $400.00. The big 3d enabled Tvs from Mitsubishi and Samsung using DLP use a scheme where the image is interdigitated I.e. an alternating checkerboard for left and right frames, I.e. effectively the horizontal and vertical resolution of the display is halved, but seems to still look very good so bandwidth is O.K. for digital broadcast. Sony, Disney, Philips and several others are hammering out various stereo deliverable formats on Blue Ray. Nvidia and Viewsonic have now made it cheaper and more practical than ever before to view stereo content and play games stereoscopically. In the next 18 months you will see it all come together, especially from software developers that create middleware type tools for post and DI and 3d media content providers.

So to stay on topic with the theme of the thread I wonder how many rental houses will get with 3d. I.e. from the rental house perspective that you need to hire out twice the number of cameras for a stereo shoot, as well as stereo rigs mounts monitors etc. The RED systems and especially with their new line of cameras (S&E) seem to be the most practicable right now for good stereo.

Interesting article. Perhaps wildlife photography procides us with an analogy. Digital still cameras did change the wildilfe photo markets quite a lot. In the past films, camera bodies and lenses cost more than people having an interest in the field were able to invest in their hobby. But nowadays, shooting say 1000 frames is a marginal cost and one does not necessarily need those expensive telephotos as the DSLRs are rather sensitive. That is, one may shoot with amazingly high ISO settings and the results are not bad at all. Consequently, the number of people shooting in a serious manner has increased a lot and the markets are filled with wildlife photos. Obviously, this has affected the business as well. The prices of (single) photos have come down.

In this sense it's not surprising to hear 5.000 Red Ones have changed the rental markets. Guess, Scarlet and Epic will have even a bigger impact in film, documentary and indie business. But we'll see. In the end of the day this will just mean the old ways to survive will be replaced by some new ones. I mean, there will always be people who make their living in the new situation. The key point is to adapt and make wise investments.

There will be consolidation. I predict a great many mergers, and they will come thru fine.

It´s always amazing how much people seem to care about this filth industry. A new type of camera, video disc or high res screen and you can bet someone pops up with the adult indstry, like if we`re running short of oxygen...:angry01:

I can see that the rental price of the body might go down, but often that's one of the cheaper things in the package.

Lenses, support, and AKS are still the same price and will remain so. Doesn't an ARRI gear head cost more than a Red one body?

Cheers,

Nick

I would expect many larger rental houses to throw in the body & charge only for the extras, gives them an edge over the 1 camera rental co's.

rental in NM?

rental in NM?

The cited article was written by a founder of a rental business Prodigy Rentals (really cool location truck btw) based in New Mexico. I am also in New Mexico and have been looking to hire a couple or RED ONEs for stereoscopic test shoots (we build stereo/3d animation software and mechanical rigs). In NM there are I believe only three RED ones for hire, and I believe two of those I think really come from Colorado. There may be many more RED Ones in NM but they are with private owners, and are not for hire, so I would think a RED ONE rental would do better in NM than the article seems to indicate. I would have thought if prodigy rentals purchased a RED ONE that it would attract customers to their business that would be in need of their other (really cool) services. Also I think that the announcement of the Epics and Scarlets (E&Ss) would mean that folks that would normally be inclined to purchase a RED ONE would instead rent until the Scarlets are released, and even then the RED ONE is still viable for hire/rental. That’s certainly what we are thinking. Go figure?

Anyone based in New Mexico who wants to hire out their RED ONEs for stereo 3d work (we know the 3d bit, we just need a pair of RED Ones, and we have the software) feel free to P.M. me!

Cheers,

Eric
