  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

--Alert!!-- RED #804 Stolen --Alert!!--

Thanks for update

Guys, I appreciate the concern but lay off. I posted the alert for a friend whose camera (804) was stolen out of his vehicle in NYC.

Also stolen was all his personal effects plus a Zeiss T* 16-24mm, Schneider Cine Xenon 50mm, Schneider Cine Xenon 75mm, Kilfitt Macro 90mm.

I've been on location and internet access isn't exactly smooth and easy so again, I apologize for not communicating more frequently.

Owner of #804 is Gary Otte / Victor Zorba (Zelo Productions)

This RED was not on a job so there is no other information other than it was stolen out of a personal vehicle on a street in NYC.

No wonder. It's kind of embarrassing. To leave all that equipment sitting on one's car seat in a NYC, car sitting on a street, in broad day light. Dude if i were a thief I'd steal it to. You've got to take more caution with such investments.

Sorry to hear about the lost though.

He didn't say that it was sitting on the car seat in broad daylight. He just said it was stolen from a personal vehicle. Could have been in the trunk, in a van, etc.

John, I wasn't there but knowing the owner, I guarantee it wasn't perched invitingly in prime view.

Some people just like to make comments 'cause they feel this is a place they can actually have an impact on people unlike their real world. The second to last sentence in his post was a bit enlightening...

I hope no other RED owner becomes a victim of these pathetic social parasites.

Guys, please reserve judgement before knowing all of the details. It's tough enough for people to have their equipment stolen. It's a kick in the face when people say, I told you so. We've all made mistakes. Maybe they made one here. But we don't know yet. I'm more interested in trying to help by keeping an eye out for that serial # on shoots, just in case it happens to show up.

I know you guys would want us to do the same for you without us giving you the third degree. No harm in asking what happened and offering solutions on how to prevent it in the future. That's what this community is for - to help each other.

A friend of mine - actually, Frank Demarco, excellent DP, shot Hedwig and Sopranos episodes - once had a superspeed set stolen from the back of a station wagon in NYC. While a PA was sitting in it.

So really, who knows what the circumstances of the theft were? I wouldn't be so quick to judge, just know that 804 is floating around, so watch for it.

Exactly, Doug and Steve. Well said.
There has been a lot of this- I mean a LOT- going on in NYC. I had some gear stolen out of a cube truck in June. Hand Held Films, TCS, Tamberelli, VER, lots of rental houses have been losing gear.
Spencer, PM me if you want. I can steer your friend towards the detective heading up the NYPD task force assigned to this problem. If the theft was simply reported as a vehicle break-in, the cops who responded may not have bumped it over to that task force.
Cheers,
Harry

It might be nice for someone to start a STOLEN sticky, with any missing Red S/Ns listed there so those who care can keep an eye out, and perhaps a short list of S/Ns in their kit bag ?

Good idea - maybe even with a link from the red.com site.
Not every interestant knows about reduser, nno matter if there is a link to the website.
As one of the most sucessfull cameras on the market, it does make sense to post it on the vendors site directly, e.g. under support (and within REDuser as sticky)

I think we definitely need a Red-managed list of stolen cameras, posted in duplicate here and on the Red.com site.

In addition to the serial number, complete information should be listed, including, but not limited to:

1. Location of theft.
2. Method of theft with as many details as possible.
3. Contact information of owner.
4. Contact information of law enforcement on the case.

I'm sure other information might be helpful, but this is a start.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

I had a customer rent a camera from me, needed to buy tape stock and B&H was a tad bit cheaper than me so he decided to go there. Was inside for maybe 5 minutes but left the case in the backseat of the car. We all know how the rest goes.

This is NYC, the owner might have been careful, and even though crime is way down compared to before, there are certain rules you got to follow. No one deserves stuff to get stolen from them, but some common sense will go a long way.

not including the obvious stuff...

1) a blanket over your stuff is not a deterrent. Crack heads have X-Ray vision and the blanket actually acts like a monetary magnifying glass.

2) if you rent a vehicle, avoid SUVs or wagons that do not have a totally enclosed trunk. tinted windows are not enough.

3) when you do place stuff in the trunk, do not park, get out, and load up the trunk. people are watching. put stuff in the trunk as soon as you get to your car, so when you arrive at your destination, you get out and go. girlfriend asks "can I throw my jacket in the trunk?". the answer is "no". divert the conversation to her trunk or something.

4) avoid parking on streets where there is a lot of active double parking / loading, right next to a subway entrance, if you see lots of BMWs, Mercedes, etc... parked, at least your not the primary target.

5) keep the car relatively tidy. a crackhead will try to steal a CD, bags, purses, etc... once inside, of course they will take anything else of opportunity. if anything, throw a Huey Lewis Sports cassette tape on dash or something.

6) if you got out of state plates, especially non-NJ or CT, be especially careful. consider keeping the car in a garage.

7) do not park your vehicle outside of B&H

Yes. What Tom said.
Better yet, insist that PRODUCTION pick up and return the gear to you. Two PAs assigned to every cube or cargo van. Or, if it's low-budg, and you're doing a favor by providing the trucking, two PAs assigned to YOU, and YOU only, to schlep the gear into the location or stage while you, the DP (or AC or whatever) deal with parking.
No sloppy habits, everyone... we can all help by being extra careful.
Michael, I put my stuff on that website as well, back in June. I'm sure it helps on some level. Having another list here would be great.
Cheers,
Harry

im with you and really agree with Leo what are the details? My family is in Law enforcement and what do you mean by details within the LAW? I think that we are all trying more than anything to understand how anyone could out-maneuver a big rental house, and thus spot the culprit comming. agreed?

If someone wants to boost your stuff, and they are willing to put a considerable amount of work into it, chances are good they will get it.

Rental houses want to have an atmosphere of trust with their clients, if they treat all the honest people like crooks it does far more damage to their business than one stolen camera.

This is not a black and white issue, it's very complicated, and approaching the problem with an air of sympathy and understanding is a good way to start.
