Powermoon - Anyone used one of these?

So, on my "monthly lens search in dark corners run", I came across a fantastic Manfrotto stand at a pawn shop. I asked the pawnist (?) " So how much for the stand.." He says " It comes with some sorta funny light balloon - you gotta get the whole thing"

-It was priced sorta high for a stand.. I bugger off.

I call the guy back and ask if he has all the parts and whats his bottom price.. He says.. "yeah.. I have the ballast, price is X"

I can't resist... it has a ballast!
So now I have this crazy light (Powermoon PROFI-1) .. 1000W Metal Halide Lamp - Looks like it is mostly used by road crews

I will try to shoot a test with it tomorrow.. I doubt that it will be anything special, but I have one hell of a work light now

Looks like a Jem ball.

I'd be careful with the CRI on that metal halide lamp, it may put out quite a green cast.

yeah - from what I could find on the German tech site, under film use it had + Grünanteil hoch ( == green space)

Hopefully it will just provide some novelty use

Yeah, they've started using much larger versions of that out here in Oz instead of the halogen open-face ones.

Probally has a nice spike in the UV range too. Might make a good tanning booth or mayby a growing light for indoor cash crops. lol

@ Cail - Now that you mention it, my day job brings me to the Yarra (Fed. Square area) this time every year - They were constructing a Ferris wheel last year, and I do recall (from the foggy corners of my memory) noting the lighting.. hrmm... I wonder if I took any photos

On transport - the Miata is a 93 with a HKS turbo and the Mini Cooper S (wifes car) has power pulley, chip, etc - The miata doesnt make much of a stuff mover .. she may need to go if I keep buying all this large lighting crap

It seems very similar to one of my new favorite light sources the HMI Balloons from AirStar, especially the small and portable Gaffair http://www.airstar-light.com/ .

Thanks for the link - looking at the photos it looks identical to the Sirocco 1000w HTI -

I may call to see if I can convert my unit to the HMI version.. although I did some test with the red tonight that looked pretty favorable.

I threw in a HMI softbox for a key and used the powermoon for fill... as suspected the mH lighting does cast on the green side, but If you know what to expect, I think it can "fill" a unique need for some night shooting. I will post the results when it is out of redalert

I am with one of the sponsors ( 3 letter computer company) - I deal with the webcasting / video / stats for the .org site - It's a pretty cool circuit if you like sports.. all the grand slams + masters golf and the tony awards.. Melbourne is one of my favs . I am a big fan of that city and the folks in it. My best drinking spots are there .. and the best steak joint on the planet imho :-D
