  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Is ther a 4:4:4 YUV codec for FCP ?

Hi Gunleik,

What are the advantages of using gluetools/dpx over FCP/Color/DPX ?

thanks

Antoine

The advantage is that gluetools tells FCP that the dpx's are really YUV and that you can send the sequence to compressor/QT to do its stuff.

The disadvantage is that when I've been rendering out DCPs (with wraptor) or other things from gluetools based dpx sequences, they have had added gradients (on greyscale charts). I like gradients, but don't really like the software to add them... :) Feels a bit odd, so I left gluetools alone...

In a Color/25 fps world, there is no good solution for dpx work (if that's not fixed in the latest update, because I haven't bothered to go back and check). You'll need a qt/qt-wrapper to make the renders behave.

But, of course, you could grade @ 24 fps and retime to 25fps later.

Since you are dealing with gluetools color and FCP, I will nag with my question again. I have a frustrating situation...

I graded a film in color using dpx's rendered with redlog out of redcine. I have used a LUT I got from the lab I am assosiated with. I can import those dpx's to FCP using gluetools, gluetools allows importing mga LUts, so I imported the same LUT I used for grading. The result in FCP is very very diffrent in all terms hue, blacks, whites from what I got from color - which is 98% what I got back from the lab.

The simple solution would be renderin out from color with the LUT. But that is a waste of some hours and extra 1.3TB.

Any help would be appriciated.

Thanks.

Hi.

As stated, I gave up on Gluetools, mostly because the way Compresor renders DCPs from DPXs with Gluetools.

That said, I have two hunches, you may well have followed them already.

1. FCP playback/colors/whatever from any high end codec, basically doesn't work.
Gamma and colors are off, but that doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the files.

Is it possible for you to take a couple of clips to the lab (without the LUT) and check if they look right in their environment?

When I set up our DCP workflow, I basically had to confine myself to really thinking of FCP as a transport-device. Don't freak out when I see the colors there, when the workflow is right, the colors look right in the end.

2. Have you checked the DPs in something like Shake? They SHOULD look like they do in color there (sans LUT of course, unless you load a LUT into Shake...). In that case, you're fine.

3. I guess you loaded the LUT into Gluetools. But there's a lot of other setting in that control-panel that repetedly mess things up for me. Dunno about you.

Maybe Take a look at BITJAZZ/ SHEERVIDEO. These are some of the best codecs ever made but Apple refused to RT enable them. I think they put pro rez to shame. Way faster and much more efficient and lossless. Take them for a test drive. David

Yes, I'm testing it now. But Color doesn't accept it. Also if you send a sequence from fcp to color with sheer codec Ycbcr 4:4:4 and if you select the export codec as quicktime original format Color renders out to pro res.

Thanks Gunleik,

The files are fine without the LUT (gamma shift as usual).
I just wanted to be able to save some rendering, but apperantly gluetools is not mature enough. I tried every thing all settings in the LUT loader and in FCP.
The tests from the lab are just perfect as I see them in color.
Right now on family "Jul" vacation in Sweeden, next week when back in Tel Aviv I will probably have the 35 mm print of the same shot from full redcine debayer and strait color import.
I will see them in a theater with some DP's and collegs and will update you if anything noticable when doing "only" half high debayering (color).
