  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What lens do you use on your 'RED'?

Yes Leica r mount and gears for all different SLR lens - going into production soon.

How about Leica M mount? (I want 21mm 1.4!)

I feel the need, for...

Lenses I own and use on my RedOne regularly:

RED 18-50; it has fine optical characteristics but the build quality is far below the top cine glass and it is rather slow.

RED 300 (not the Pro version); when you really need a 300mm prime its a wonderful lens, sharp and very little CA. With proper DI it can cut with other lenses just fine.

Zeiss Mk2 SuperSpeeds 25, 50, 85; I adore these lenses and my little bastard set handles narrative work on location wonderfully. I love opening them up for the "cinematic" look they have. The mellower, lower contrast characteristics of these older lenses suits my personal aesthetic when shooting with a digital device. I can always "snap" the contrast up in Scratch if need be.

My favorite rental glass for the RedOne is Zeiss Ultra Primes but all the top cine lenses look great.

just my .02

Cheers-

I use the Nikon 17-35, ZF 35, ZF 50, Nikon 85, Nikon 80-200. I had most of them cinematized.

Great!

Looking forward to get gears.

Still no pardon for IMS users BUT only with IMS for RED you'll get Leica-M mount on R1.

I own various still lenses, that I have yet to mess with on RED. I've just stuck with PL mount glass so far.

What I own for PL glass:

Cooke 18-100
Peleng 8mm fisheye
Zeiss standard 14mm
RED 18-50
RED 300 PRO

What I typically rent:
Zeiss ultra primes and master primes, occasionally some standards. Angenieux 15-40 and 24-290. Or whatever else I may need and/or can get my hands on.

Are these still lenses? are they converted to cine?

Rpshooter,

They are all SLR lenses. For the Nikons I had to make myself the Nikon G-lens mount. I know Doug Underdahl makes one too and it looks really nice.

They are converted to cine in the sense that I made aluminum rings that custom fit each lens and bring the outside diameter to about the size of some Cooke Primes. Also these rings I made are cine gear, meaning any FF will work with them. I understand duclos does this too. I'm overseas and I have a nice shop, so I make stuff myself (well actually with my father and brother), but if you are in LA, there are options you can look into.

I've tested these lenses side by side with some Arri Schneider Cine primes, and my SLR set blew them out of the water. The Schneider's had very bad vignetting, two of them were decollimated (although that comes from years of use without service), they were impossible to use with your typical follow focus, and their sharpness was inferior to the SLR's. Also, the focal throw that "cine lenses always have" was overrated because the scheniders only have 180 degrees.

I have worked with some Zeiss Cine Primes in the past (I'm actually going to do a side by side test in the next few weeks), and my set of Zeiss ZF's has the same quality you expect from Zeiss. Other than the mechanical aspect (the smaller focus throw, etc), I felt like I was using the Cine Zeiss. Oh...and the SLR's are quite a bit smaller and lighter, so that's great, and yet they still have a nice size (I hate super tiny lenses...that was also something I didn't like with the Schneiders).

I love using my 12x Optimo! But I am still very puckered up from the $$$ Ouch!

Most of the time I run with my Zeiss SS MarkIIs. They are way more mobile!

Happy Holidays All!

Prost,
Rich

That was some nice footage shot with just available light.

Genres of production: I don’t do narrative cinema. I do sports, nature/wildlife, travel, music, lifestyle, tourism, cultures, documentaries of various kinds, stock footage in multiple genres, business media.

None of my still lenses are “cinevised”. They are stock – except the Canon 150-600 has a Century PL mount conversion and has been de-clicked by Duclos. Due to the highly mobile work we do, we don’t use them with a follow focus, and we rarely use them with a matte box. We use screw on filters with them. Cine lenses are generally too heavy and frequently too short in focal length for their size and weight to be of much use to us in the mobile genres we shoot. That's why we use a lot of 35mm stills lenses - and the results have been very good.

Hey Sanjin,

How much does that Leica go for btw?

Leica in general is the most expensive still lenses just because of the quality and rigorous production control.

But you do not need always the new lenses that are actually the best you can buy.

Forget this.

You could be also very happy with second hand and vintage stuff.

I only know the two good vintage shops in US and here we are:

1. Kevin cameras L.A.

2. KEH Camera

Btw. Leica R is very, very good and for prime stills better than Nikon F, Canon EF, Zeiss/Cosina ZF..etc... for sure.

Leica M lenses are pure and true legend, unbeatable from all competition.

Also Leica-R you can run with Leica-R to EOS adapter with Alesniak or Birger mount on RED.

Unfortunately IMS that can get Leica-R and Leica-M is just for the pirates like me.

Still is not recommended here.

Ha! Well, I guess you can be a pirate around here. You just have to be stealth about it. You are a true pioneer Sanjin!

From your tests, why is Leica-R optically better than Nikon ZF which are quite good?

Richard,

The first: better optics.

The second: better production control than Zeiss ZF, Nikon F, Canon EF, Sigma, etc...

The third: just because all of that is optically better between and at f/4 and f/5.6 that are the sweet spots of the lens optical quality.

The fourth: all that means that Leica's are sharper at corners, almost no any CA at sweet spots and also having more resolution.

The fifth: FF35 ready.

Also one another lens king is Angenieux
(that also in vintage you could find for Leica-R, Canon FD and Nikon F mounts at Kevin Cameras)
and Angenieux is the master of zooms for cine or stills (now unfortunately they do not make any).

Have a look at these 2K pictures below that were shot on RED1 with Angenieux 70-210 Canon FD mount f/3.5.

The lens is sharp in center and also at corners that you could see it below even if these are not the best examples.

If you cannot afford always Angenieux Optimo you can STILL get affordable Angenieux still zooms in FD, Leica-R or Nikon F mount.
