Which usually comes first in the post production workflow: color grading or sound mixing? Both will be outsourced.

Thanks

They can work in parallel or it may depend on what's leading the story line. Complete whichever is likely to change most first. If you use say Color and protools and create a virtual session you can always re visit it if you need to.

If you're locked off and absolutely no more editing, you can do both simultaneously. You'll just have have to bring the mixed audio onto the colour corrected sequence.

On a feature film, it takes at least 5 weeks to get through sound editorial and ADR, and move into predubs/final mixing. In that time, you can pretty much finish your DI, with the possible exception of film out. So obviously it depends on the length of your program, but color timing goes first on a movie.

Lock picture before sound.

It's easier to sync sound to picture than picture to sound.

For example, one of the last things that are delivered are visual effects. If a CG explosion happens 2 frames later in the final render you want to be able to slip the sound effect to match.

Similarly, if at the last minute you notice anything out of sync once you've done the online it's easier to fix this sync in the mix than to try to adjust picture to locked audio ;)
