The round front are a newer design, with the anamorphic element in the middle of the optical assembly instead of the front. They breath less, and exhibit less artifacts. they also most likely have better multicoatings, being newer.

The square front were made up until the early '80s. I have a 35mm from '82. Just from looking at it, it seems the coatings are different than the lenses from the mid 70's. The square fronts breath more, and being the older anamorphic element in the front design, exhibit more of the classic anamorphic artifacts such as flairs. The square front 35mm is considered by some to be superior to the round front, having less distortion and being smaller and lighter.

The easiest way to see something shot on the square fronts is probably to go rent Solaris. There are a lot of soviet movies shot in "Sovscope", but thats one of the better known and easiest to get your hands on.

I have yet to buy a lens from anywhere in the former soviet union that did not need cleaning and servicing when I got my hands on it. Duclose has done excellent work, and I know that Bernie at Super16 works on them.

The square fronts go 35,50,80. The round fronts, 35,50,75. After the 75mm they are different versions of the same lens with extenders built in.

I really like the look of most of the newer soviet lens designs, and if you have them cleaned and lubed, they perform very well mechanically.

Cheers,

Nick
