ok, it looks great, but i have some underexposed flat areas in the background that are noisy as shit. Is there an easy way to deal with this?

THANKS! :)

Hmmm... I just got as close as I could to my dogs shit and couldn't hear anything. Is it a particular type of shit you are talking about?

JK :)

I don't know about easy but I've had a lot of success with the Denoise in After effects , failing that I crush the blacks in the grade.

yeah, I'm pretty sure that's what most people use, but I don't have after affects :( and unfortunately this noise is in this flat grey area, my blacks are nice and clean (crushed).

Looking at it again, it's not actually that bad. Well, it is, but it's only in a few shots where its a real pain in the ass, and I shot B+W which makes it less offensive, but if anyone has any other ideas please let me know.

there's a couple plugins floating around out there that do the same as the AE denoise, try searching for 'smart denoise' filter, that's one we have on our systems can't remember who makes it though...hope that helps

I've tried pretty much all of them.

Hands down the best is FOUNDRY FURNACE.

They have it for FCP/AE for $500 ($750 floating) - with a 12-15 day water-mark free trial.

For really tough shots - use a layer with a vignette using a stronger "blend" setting on the outer mask (BG)

VERY SLOW render times - but we have pulled off some miracles with under-exposed shots with this plug-in.

I had to deal with some underexposed clips for last couple of weeks and this is what I found. I'm sure experienced Colorists already know this nature.

If you're using Color, go to the REDROOM, then use Brightness and Contrast to make the latitude of your underexposed clip as wide as possible. Keep in mind that you try to expand the range that you want to see. You may have to give up on retaining the high area when you are doing this. I got by with some underexposed clips without using the denoising process.

Can you post a link to an example frame as a TIF file made with REDCINE from your R3D file.

My sharp/soft filter can sharpen edges and soften flat areas, it was setup for doing film scans on very grainy footage shot at f/1.2 at night. If you set the sharp part just a little over equal and soft down more than that you can cut the noise. What works best to to soften the blue much more than the red since they eye sees detail in the yellow colors, you can make the blue very out of focus and it does not look as soft as you might expect.
