I have just finished watching the last of 3 episodes of "WALLENDER" on BBC1 9pm Sunday evenings. I understand it was shot on RED !! Fantastic piece of work, beautiful photography and sharp pictures. This is what I believe is the way forward. The content was good as well. But OH!!! those pictures. Fantastic.
Anybody know what the lenses were? I have my thoughts but would love to know for sure.

I believe they were Optimo's but I dont know for definite, Id like to know more about the lenses also.

The BBC and production company should be very proud of the production in every respect. The are by far the best pictures I've seen on TV for a long time.

Just found an article in HD magazine which has some details and says primes but doesnt give any more detail. However there's an article on this board about Wallander which suggests Optimo's......

ask Geoff Boyle I believe he shot them - there are some posts here on reduser by him about the shoot...

He didn't shoot the ones that have gone out. I believe Anthony Dod Mantle shot the eps that have gone out. Although Geoff is probably gong to know what lenses where on the job.

I looked into this a bit because I accidentally walked into a room with it playing and instantly knew it was Red.

There is some great lowish contrast under exposed shots (not Tv like) in the small portion of an Ep I watched.

Anthony Dod Mantle is a great DP - I think they were really lucky to get him, he usually does features (28 Days Later, Last King of Scotland, Slumdog Millionaire etc). I've only seen the opening episode so far but I thought it was visually one of the best British co-productions I've seen for a long time. It's very rare for British tv dramas to shoot on 35mm (unlike the States), so it was nice to see something well composed and nicely lit with that killer 35mm depth of field. Likewise they were lucky to get Kenneth Branagh...a seriously good actor. All in all a great calling card for Red (and hopefully it'll help its acceptance in the UK tv drama world).

Wallander comments

Wallander comments

Wallander has excited various comments in the UK especially from those that saw the HD transmission on BBCHD. The internal night scenes were very good as were various exteriors but equally the highlights were not always controlled well especially where there was a lot of sea or sky. It didnt look filmic more like high end HD. By contrast many of the 35mm film projects look better on the HD channels so until Epic Red One is not re-writing the rule book.

I thougth Wallander was a very good-looking detective series. The show had very good location work, and the Red performed very nice in Nordic light. Beautiful to watch.

While I enjoyed Wallander, I find the concept absurd. A British remake of a swedish detective series? They drive swedish police cars, read and write Swedish (a subplot is Wallander finding a date online), but they all speak English. One of the scenes that really broke the fourth wall for me, was a interview with a former minister of justice (soon to be a murder victim) arguing for Sweden's place in Europe, all in perfect Oxford English!

Some screenshots:

For example German ZDF TV serials based on writtings by Rosamunde Pilcher take place in Cornwall, GB with a German cast and crew and all is spoken in perfect German (Hoch Deutsch) :) :) .

Nothing new.

Not going to comment on the strange remake. But what an amazing photography! Anybody got screens of the scene in the woods?

Actually I've been shooting the Swedish version of Wallander not the UK one!

ADM shot 2 of the UK ones the middle one was jan j....????? I much preferred the JJ one but that's probably because he went for wider shot's and a less "lit" look, more like the Swedish series.

I'm off to Srockholm to grade my first 2 in a couple of weeks, I let you know how it goes.

Oh and we used the lightweight Optimo's I believe the UK production used Cookes.

I just found this page where Geoff Boyle FBKS presented:

"Wallander movies 2 & 3
These stills were shot by Nile Leander my second camera operator.

I've uploaded them because a lot of people have asked about the ET shoulder mount and the odd positioning of the hard drive mount that I used".
