What is the OD of the lens front? I need it to work with my Arri MB-20Mk2 which, if memory serves, tops out at 114mm without mods.

Pricing on PL lenses has been very seller friendly of late, I wonder at what point wide availability of a lens like the RED 18-85 for $10K will impact the value of an Angie 17-102, the Cooke 18-100 and other similar zooms?

Hi there, Blair. . .

I wonder the exact same thing. I was thinking about springing for either a 17-102 or a Cooke 18-100, but that 18-85 new for $10K with warranty just keeps me in check. And it is smaller, as well. Now, how good it looks compared to the other two lenses is just an unknown.

I'd love the new Optimo Rouge lenses, 'cause I can't imagine much of any film being used in three or four more years, but I'm not certain they are worth twice the price of RED's 18-85. Any thoughts on this score?

is that resale value or rental value ?
i'm not seeing/hearing any request for Red 18-85mm in SF rental market...
1st choice is usually cooke 18-100 ( budget) .. 2nd the optomo's ( unless $$ is no object then optomo is 1st) ...
when i mention the Red 18-85 i usually hear about they were not impressed with the Red 18-50 ...

if you are in rental market then i say you have to look at RENTAL value and that currently goes to the cooke .....

if a personal camera/lens then Red 18-85 could be the choice ( was mine) ...

The shoot out Matt Uhry did seemed to suggest very similar if not better performance of the Red Zoom to the Cooke 18-100. The corners may have even been sharper on the 18-50. I don't know about the 17-105 but this is a notoriously sharp lens so it remains to be seen.

How in the heck could ANYONE do a hand-held shot using a Cooke 18-100 or an Angenieux 17-102 on a RED One an not be Hercules?

How Rouge

How Rouge

I actually had reservation #23 for the Optimo Rouge but decided not to execute it. The 30-80 range just didn't make a lot of sense to me. For most hand held work, or location interiors, I want to be able to go wider than 30 mils on a zoom. If I need reach for shooting live concerts or something like that 80mm is not enough lens.

I like the 18-85 range of the new RED zoom as it should rock for most narrative work and be wide enough for hand held.

What I would really love is a PL mount 15 to 150mm at T2.4 with a doubler and a ENG style hand grip on the right side of the barrel that weighs less than 8 pounds . Man's gotta have a dream.

I definitely am thinking of that 18-85. . . does it really look good enough for high-quality narrative work? That is, how is the bokeh???? I've heard rumors that it doesn't look as good as the Ang or Cookes.

i just don't know how you're going to hand hold using 18-85mm ?? i guess it could be done but ? but ? it would be so much easier to use a 18/24mm prime .. the 18-85 is very LARGE/BIG....

i just got mine on Monday ... checked it out yesterday ... i have to say the mechanics are excellent ... didn't do any resolution test ... the images look excellent ... it hit the hard focus ft. marks perfect and the focus is very smooth ... very even field across the whole frame ( wide open) ... looks sharp in all corners ( wide open) ...
i would say if you had shots from the Red/cooke/optimo they would all be very , very slightly different .... i think for now most are going to stay with cooke/Ang ..once there's a few movie's out on the big screen ( w/excellent cinematography ) that uses the 18-85 - then others will follow ( yes, it's the DP but somebody needs to break the ice using 18-85 ) ...

I'd have to say I've been very happy with my Angenieux 17-102. I haven't done technical tests on mine, but subjectively, and in casual comparison with other lenses, I like the clarity and contrast. I also like the minimum focus. (less than 2.5 feet, I believe). The thing is BIG though. Definitely need a 6x6 matte box. But again, it's nice glass and fairly fast. I'm waiting for the 18-85, but when will that be out? And I think the Angenieux should hold most, if not all of its value.
