So I just finished shooting my second short film this year and though I'd post a report of some new toys I've bought/found.
First off the IndiSlider from IndiFocus.com, I'd heard reviews form around the tubes about this being a high quality piece for small cameras an even a few big ones and hadn't really considered it a viable option for Red until I went to the website and saw the weight rating at 1TON! That's not realistic but it can handle a good amount of weight so I decided to call them up and the guys there actualy made me a custom 4' slider with a thicker 1/2" base. Instead of bearings the IndiSlider uses a teflon glider on a smooth greased rail. It's not as free moving as a traditional slider but it does the trick and is very smooth and silent especially important for cinematic moves. I had to modify it a bit to fit my 2575 Oconnor but it did it's job admirably, especially for $600. Next I'll try and add a proper Mitchell receiver.
I can't post footage till after the short is shown at a film festival but I might post some test footage later.
Next are the "Stupid lights" (My first AC Sherri tells me this is what Starraro calls them, so it's good enough for me). Stupid lights are compact florescent bulbs that can be bought in a variety of wattages and are all 5000K balanced. For the short film I just worked on I used 2x 100W, 2x 150W and 1x 300W equivalent lights, they actually draw much less. I bought them from lightbulbs Unlimited for about $100 and used them in cheap work lamp fixtures from home depot. I was surprised as anyone how good they looked, and they let me stay 5000K the whole shoot.
Here a stupid light is keying a night exterior (100W work light with diffuser) and interior (300W in china ball).
Lastly my new baby... the 200mm F2 Nikkor, converted to PL mount by Stuart Rabin at focus Optics. As most of you know I'm a big fan of Nikkor lenses and so this is a real treat for me. It's a beautiful lens that just beggs to be used in close ups. Especially nighttime car interiors where point light sources in the background render into glorious spheres...
This scene was lit with just two litepanels and a string of christmas lights.
This lens is incredibly sharp even at T2 and is completely unforgiving for focus, big props to my first AC Sherri Miranda for nailing it with this lens.
