  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Any plans for the USB port besides powering my personal fan?

I'd suggest NOT a keyboard in first place, but a simple mouse driver. Then we could hook up a computer USB mouse or trackball or touchpad and have a very good alternative. I miss that especially for navigating in zoomed mode.

Btw, is it just me or does 1:1 zoom in build 17 not allow us to use the joystick to pan around? I have a stuck center only zoom over here, no joy to watch a particular part of the image in zoom mode...

I'd suggest NOT a keyboard in first place, but a simple mouse driver.

A mouse necessitates a graphical user interface, which I don't think Red One has. Moving an arrow around won't do much unless the programmers have given you something to click on.

On the other hand, Joystick up/down/left/right wold translate pretty simply to Cursor up/down/left/right.

Whaddya say Red guys? Now that Build 17 is out you're probably just sitting around anyway looking for something to justify your continued employment. :-)

How about for a menu interface that I can stick on the smart side of the camera. Of course that would have to be built as well.

They seem to have simply abandoned the USB

Perhaps this is a good indication that the camera really isn't ready for market. The mysterious USB ports are one (two in this case) of the things that I am still wondering what they are for.

As a buyer of a RED ONE during RED's big announcement a few weeks back, I can't help but wish the RED TEAM would focus on completing the ONE model before announcing nearly a dozen version of their next two cameras. After having time to think about, I can't help but feel that a promise has been broken.

I do love the camera, but feel it still leaves something to be desired.

With the new announcements, I wonder if this is end of road for Red 1 enhancements (after this upgrade we're in the midst of).

Hi Shawn,

I don't think they will stop development on R1 for a while.
I assume that pretty much of the cameras will be no more FPGA but ASIC for the matter of speed, power consumption etc. So the field for testing things is a FPGA based camera like the R1.

Anyhow, I bet R1 is a valid playfield for many new things to come.

It appeared to me that the latest firmware build was significantly smaller than previous ones. Maybe the optimized many of the code and now there if free space left over for new improvements? I hope so.

Clearly will there be a point when R1 is "finished". But I doubt it will be earlier than before the replacement devices hit the market. Some of them are scheduled 2010, though...

I don't see a reason why new firmware will not become available in R1. I can even imagine that at some point a complete new camera OS can hit us again, who knows?

When they granulate their new cameras firmware, it may work out in optimizations for the old one too. They learn every day. Remember how many times a 1:1 zoom was officially being "ignored" and inspite this now its finally there. RED is apparently willing to not being fixed to what they have said in the past, at least not if its changed for the better. I see no reason to complain about this.

Cheers,
Axel

A readily-available alternate control method would be a shoot-saver in many circumstances.

It appears that Red runs a *nix operating system, so adding USB keyboard drivers should be at most a single day's project for one of their geniuses.

I just got word of a joystick issue with a camera that's in the middle of a long shoot. Any chance that there may be a solution for this instant camera-killer?
PLEASE!

Mark

What's the joystick issue - can't go left/up/right or whatever? If it's that it's easy to fix - the knob has got pushed too far in and is hitting the camera body before actioning the switch- loosen the 0.6mm allen key that holds the knob on the shaft move it back away from the camera and retighten. Mine has done this a couple of times (I now carry a replacement joystick knob and allen key in my kit...)

Hope that helps

Multitrack digital audio-in would be nice. All the workflow benefits of recording single-system sound, but with the quality of high-end external audio gear.
