I wonder if the RED will accept a 16GB card from anyone but their own...has anyone tested this one?

I could only get 44 fps at 3K(16x9) out of a Lexar 8GB rated at 300x...I wonder what the speed needs to be to get the full 60 fps. I know that RED has stated that their 16GB runs at 550x (or so).

i heard it's because those are the max speeds and the speed needs to be maintained.
 
As Brandon said, manufacturers like - naturally - to tout their maximum speeds (i.e. burst speed), while what we really need is a "minimum sustainable" of 28/36 mb/sec.

Turns out, only very, very few cards can handle this.

My hope is as more consumer video cameras record to chips, the maintained speed will become more of a standard.

I need to go out and get a few of those Lexar 8GBs. Can someone please confirm I am getting the right thing, here.

The ones I have have Mfr. Part ending on 386, but the name is absolutely correct.

(A brief Google search suggests that the ones ending in 381 are way, way more popular. Also suggests that the 386 ones are only for the European market. My guess is that it really does not matter, as long at it is a) Lexar b) 8gig c) UDMA d) 300x e) professional. Good luck)

The Delkin has been tested. Too slow.
 
Although off the shelf Lexar 8GB UDMA cards work, I do have a cautionary tale. I purchased three of them for a particular shoot. They were in addition to the 2 RED 8GB cards I have. One of the Lexars had some corrupt media. Not sure if this was coincidence or perhaps Red tests and certifies their versions to make sure they fall within precise tolerances. I've never had any problems with Red 8GB cards. This is by no means a scientific analysis though, so by all means don't take this as gospel.

I've had problems with Lexars too. I own about a dozen of them, but out of the dozen Lexar 8GB cards I have, I have had 5 of them replaced. Of the first 5 or 6 I bought, 3 went bad in a matter of only a couple uses.

I have found that all the Lexars tend to perform poorly if they get hot and they also perform slower as they fill up. The only time my camera has ever dropped frames is shooting to a Lexar card.

I do not recommend Lexar 8GB cards. Yes, the camera recognizes and uses them. But the cards just don't hold up for RED.

A lot of RED owners are using the Lexars and I thought my experience was just a fluke or luck of the draw. So I guess I'm not the only one.
 
All the cards listed here are too slow.. company speed ratings listed are benchmarks that unfortunately are usually inaccurate, or "pick of the litter" and are tested with the most efficient block size.. which is usually the polar opposite of how RED writes.

We actively test every card that comes to market we can find..

I've had very stable performance from the Lexar 8 GB cards. I have four RED cards and four Lexar. The only one giving me a "Slow Media" message from time to time is one of the RED cards.
 
So Red cards are rated at what speed? I assume they are UDMA?

How do they compare to Pretec's 16GB x333?

If Red cards have a faster listed speed (like x400 or x500), does that speed apply only to use in a Red One, or in all high-speed UDMA devices, like new DSLRs?
 
I second Tom's questions. I am wondering how several manufacturers can claim that their CF cards are the fastest at 305x, 333x, 350x, etc. when it has been said that RED's cards are the equivalent to 500x or 550x. Is it a proprietary read/write format that RED has designed?

Like Tom asked...how would they work in a normal DSLR, like the new 5D Mk II? It would be good to be able to use them in all cameras... maximizing the investment as they ARE expensive.
