Vilmos Zsigmond, ASC
Academy Award Winner and cinematographer of some of the best Photographed movies, such as:

Deer Hunter
Deliverance
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Images
The Rose
Heaven's Gate
Blow Out
The Ghost and the Darkness
The River
The Black Dahlia

We just completed our month long, very comprehensive camera test.
Using 3 x RED Camera's, Arri Master Primes & Angeniuex Optimo's.

Going through the entire film out process, printing both in 2K & 4K film.
Testing all different film stocks, and finally through the (IP)-(IN).

I must say, I have gained more information in the past couple months, working with Vilmos, then the past year and a half working exclusively with the RED camera. He is truly amazing.

Enjoy the pix's

Don't forget that Vilmos Zsigmond ASC did "The Deer Hunter" (1978) with Panavision cameras and lenses and directed by Michael Cimino.

The fiim won 5 Oscars. Vilmos was also nominated.

Give us some more details and videos about the test, please!

It must have been great working with Vilmos,
I did a lighting workshop with him 25 years ago,I learned more about how to think about light - that I take with me to this day on every job, than I may have ever learned on my own, I'm sure of it. Vilmos - you Rock. -Thank You.

So how to "Think" about light according to Vilmos? Any words from the Master would be facinating to hear. Care to share?

DogDay.

I pulled focus for Vilmos on 1/2 a dozen commercials back in the day....(New York and Florida). He is a great guy and open to passing his knowledge on. He really loves to shoot and you can see it on the screen, both big and small, and on his face.

Would you like to share what you learnt? Thanks

This is crazy exciting.

IMHO Vilmos is one of the "best-of-the-best".

He will shoot some magic Redcode for sure.

see the doc he shot - Ljuset håller mig sällskap (Swedish for - "The light keeps me company") about cinematographer Sven Nykvist

Plenty of "fan boy'isms," but so what? Any discoveries?

Hey Peter, I did a Maine Photographic Workshop with Vilmos in 1980 in Rockport Maine (yes I know...a long time ago) you weren't by chance in that same class were you?

I'll never forget the night shot he did with us. I was blown away by the simple, logical approach he took, the inventiveness of bouncing light off of a stream and getting a complex shot lit within an hour—even with the instructor's narrative. I was the first student he critiqued in class. Lighting a card game to look like it was lit with a single bare light bulb. When he saw my setup, he said he didn't think I needed the fill. I thought I did. When we reviewed the rushes, he agreed it was needed. Made my day ;)

Anyway, a wonderful experience and a gifted man. Would love to shoot with him.

Also remember meeting an AC named Douglas Hart who had worked in NY on Woody Allen features.

Fond memories...

So the pictures which you see our from camera, non-color graded.
We did our own look up table.

It looks especially amazing, after Laser Pacific did their magic.
And when we printed the RED footage onto film, in both 2K and 4K and all the way, through the entire IP/IN process.

I have seen the Sven Nykvist documentary. Superb and moving.

It is indeed exciting that that someone of Zsigmond's stature is shooting on Red. There is an excellent conversation with him in "Masters of Light" by Dennis Schaefer and Larry Salvato.
