Just wrapped this video for Lost Highway artist Donavon Frankenreiter.

http://kargesmedia.com/yourheart_final.mov

We shot it in San Juan Capistrano, CA, across from the mission at this cool little villa where they usually have small weddings. We did it in between a tour date of his in Philly & Toronto, he flew in, and I had him for about 8 hours. He's also a professional surfer, travels the world surfing and (now) playing his music. His management walked it into VH1 last week but I honestly thought they didn't even play videos anymore. So hopefully we'll see it there soon.

The RED camera was from Alex H. who frequents this board. I was very happy with the way everything went. No problems at all, just a great experience.

James Kniest DP'd it & George Manzanilla edited it.

Great Looks

Great Looks

Hello Matthew,
The clip looks great, and i really enjoyed it and the music.
The daylights shots looks tasty and beautiful.
How did you light the night shots? i had same issues with noise creeping in...
Still - it looks fabulous!
Take a look at my latest music video here - www.snowdrum.com

Very cool video !!

Very nice work Matthew - camera movements, concept, etc. I like it! Donavon has a great sense of humor - which came through in your production. His music is cool, and he likes to have fun along the way. He's laid back, but he gets it done!

Donavon is a longtime friend of mine. I directed and shot several national television segments in 2000 featuring Donavon and the band he was with before he launched his solo career - Sunchild.

The segments we did were VH1 Behind the Scenes style. In one we shadowed the band documentary-style as they prepared to be the opening band for a .38 Special concert, and then shot creative shots of Sunchild's concert that night. For another segment we went right into Donavon's house and did a lifestyle piece on him and his posse, including his guitar and vintage surfboard collection. Fun stuff!

The last time I hung out with Donavon was last December on the North Shore of Oahu, before he gave a benefit concert. Great guy. We were there to shoot professional surfing at Pipeline and other breaks.

His music is way cool...

Snow-
Rad name btw. I wasn't worried about any noise during the night shots, because regular people who watch music videos don't care about it. I was more concerned overall about getting Donny to have some fun and be himself (he was going on 4 hours of sleep in two days) in front of the camera and nail that.
Steve-
Maybe we've run into each other. I was on the 97 Warped Tour with Sunchild, and that's when we (Sugar Ray) met them. That was crazy. That tour was all heavy and rocked out, and here are these Allman Bros type hippie dudes rocking it!- and the funny thing was, all the headlining bands would all gather around Sunchild on their little stage and check 'em out cause really they were doing the most punk rock thing if you really think about it. (and then the end of the tour turned into a big jam session)

Thanks for comments. My DP is great. Really fun shoot, love the camera, workflow was amazing.

Matt, it looks great. What was your workflow on this? Was the footage processed or edited directly from the proxies?

Alex, what up. Can't wait to work again.
Bal, Thanks. I was initially offered this mexican restuarant to shoot at, and I thought it would be killer, cause it was in South El Puente, but had to scrap it cause it was a terrible room. Boxy, boring, no vibe. So I luckily found an old friend who owned this great little place- The Villa at San Juan Capistrano. The whole vibe there is awesome.
Steve, edited straight from proxies. And thanks.

Very nice. How was the QuickTime created? The combination of size, quality, and load time is impressive.

Thanks.

James,
Pretty simple. Make sure to use Compressor. I have Episode, and it's fast and very good, but compressor is better when you want the best quality.
Quicktime 7 download for LAN preset

Hey Matthew,
How did you guys light the shots where Don is inside and you can see the outside(the band)...and the window isn't blown out? Did you have a lot of light inside in order to even it out?

Eric,

I think in most passes, we were lighting for the mariachis outside, and leaving donavon a little dark. There were no lights inside, but I think we were bouncing some light in from the window, up and to the left of the guys outside. On one shot the window is blown out more than I'd like, but lots of music videos have moments that are blown out.

Here's some behind the scenes photos and frame grabs:
