Hi there guys, first post here and I would like to say hello to everyone here and I want to introduce myself to the community, I am from san antonio texas, editor for a local channel and I am at your service to everyone in the area, I have been a long time lurker of the forum and now a happy member, I love what the Red community has going on here and I am so glad I can be part of it, ok first question guys, hopefully someone can point me on the right direction, let me first tell you my home personal setup as I already told you, I am an editor for a channel here but I freelace here and there after hours, my home setup is:

macpro 2.66, nvidia 8800gt GPU, 16GB of ram, 1TB of G-tech FW800,Matrox MXO feeding dual apple cinema displays (one used for HD monitoring) and also a sony ntsc boradcast monitor, via the SD out of the MXO.

Software:
FCS2 ( I use apple color for all my grading...vital to me!!:)
Adobe CS3 suite

All of the side projects that I work on are mostly DVCPRO HD but guess what? I have an upcoming gig that will require for me to edit RED Footie, the end product will be 1080 HD and maybe DVD
and after reading and reading I must say that I am overwhelmed with all the different workflows that fellow users excercise, so maybe someone can point me in the right direction now that you know my setup, easy is fast for me, so I am looking at the best most used way people go about this with my setup or similar setup. Now know this, I will be present when the project is being shot, and I will have on the field a macbook pro and a FW800 drive and then bring the footie back to the home studio to edit up a storm

again sorry for the long post guys and again I thank you and I am so glad I am part of this great community.

God bless,
Alex

Welcome Alex!

Yes, you are right, there are many viable workflows.
Before I can recommend one to you, I need to know a few things: will your project be VFX-heavy or mainly cuts only? Will the shooting ratio be rather high or low?How tight are your deadlines after shooting?

Hello Nomad!!! sorry I should of mentioned that, the project will not be vfx heavy, shooting ratio will be medium just kinda shoot only what we need, no deadlines for shooting, thanks again and point me in the right way

Well, then you have a lot of freedom.

You can either wrap your proxies to do an offline edit via Log & Transfer in FCP (set to 'Native"), which is fast and go straight to Color for grading. Then do the final render in Color as ProRes HQ.

Or you can make a first-light correction in REDAlert (avoid curves), import via L&T as ProRes from the start (long conversion times), happily edit along (more responsive) and stay in that format.

And have a look at this too:
