I have received a lot of emails regarding RED and the economy... especially given the announcements of Canon, Nikon and Sony's drastic cutbacks in development and massive layoffs.

RED is charging forward at full steam. There are no layoffs, no development cuts and no slowing down.

While we expect that sales will be slower next year of everything, we don't mind. Our goal is to to make the best stuff for professionals, and continue to do so. When our professional customers can afford what we are doing... we will be ready.

Sleep tight. RED is awake.

In times of crisis full steam ahead!!!
I have my savings ready whenever you are ;)
Thanks for your compromise with this enterprise.
Its good to be a part of this!! :)

Hi Jim,

That's reassuring. Despite the bleakness in the news, I'm hopeful for 2009 too. Myself and all my collaborators have been securing some decent jobs lately. Even more hopeful is that many more than usual have been seriously considering the addition of video to their mix of marketing and presentation materials. I'm definitely onboard for a 2/3" Scarlet.

Now that the Canon 1Ds Mark IV development has been put on hold with no clear answers when they will bring the new product out - I am saving my pennies for Scarlet - Very happy news Jim that red is not slowing down like all the other 3 big Japanese companies!

One question, when do the RED 35mm AF lenses come out?

Jim, don't you think now is a wonderful time to hire a ton of smart Windows coders to help your valiant RED team. Your team seems brilliant but there are only like 4 guys who post on Reduser - judging by the scope of the software RED needs, I'd feel a lot more reassured if it were 40...

Face it: because RED force everyone to access .R3D files through your tools, RED is now a software company and lives and dies on the quality of those tools.

Bet you could snap up some great people right now. Just sayin' ;)

And NO I am not looking for a job. My mom (who was a systems analyst / programmer) warned me about the dangers of programming for a living...

Jim,

Thank you for your reassurance; of course I'm not surprised. I plunked down my $1000 deposit on the Red One in the summer of 2006 based on the first images AND your reputation and background. I've been in business long enough to know that buying into a platform (camera, computer, etc.) is a long-term relationship and that it's very important that the manufacturer will be around. More than the money spent, it's the time investment to learn new tools that is important to me, because the best work is done once I am no longer concentrating on how to use the tools and only thinking about what I am making with them.

Tight and focused companies like Red do well even in difficult economic times. I've seen some misinformation from the usual suspects that Red won't last, but frankly I think that's ridiculous, and I place my bets very carefully. Red's health is vital to our businesses, and that's one thing these days that I am not worrying about. IMHO, the unblind devotion of us Redites is more than matched by the motivation and competence of the Red Team, and together we are changing the industry. I believe these times will only accelerate the rise of Red.

Best Regards,

That's great news.

Unfortunately a lot of us are still penny-pinching hardcore to save up for these gorgeous cameras. Hopefully, and God-willing, by this time next year we (all your customers) have not become victims of this fallout. We would love to take advantage of this opportunity you've given us. Although $7,000 is still expensive, for what we're getting it is FAR less expensive than what's out in the market--so I've told my wife! (I've already made the proposition to her and convinced her on the investment, so now she's helping me raise money for it--sacrificing all my birthday and Christmas presents for the next several years!!!! :w00t: )

She still wants to know who the heck you are, Jim, and why the heck you're stealing her dumb husband's milk money!!!

Due to this crisis and some very important decissions and speculating on the future I'd love to see you Mr. Jannard and your incredible team to get the Red primes out asap, because i really would like to test and own them instead of having to spend to much money on another set...while their will be always so much left that might be more interesting in my situation to get and achieve a better result. I know some of them are famous and have a already known brandname on them, but not just the price would justify them if I could be satisfied with what you will have to offer by then.

It seems it will be important aswell, that once the new Scarlet and Epics come out that either Scratch support them immediately and even better, all the high end tools and also adobe or fcp would support them from the beginning, maby with all your experience so far and a little more understanding you could try to give them an sdk even sooner than when the cameras get released, so we won't have these negative discussions anymore over and over again from annoying people.

This to me is the first truly amazing statement I've heard from you and I can say that I'm quite happier and I'm pleasantly surprised when I can find individuals who are capable of looking past the void that is to the realm of what can be. If you need an un-biased alpha tester for Scarlet, let me know. I'll be patiently waiting.

Good news! May RED and everyone be ok next year.

How long did that take you? Everytime I try to explain something technical to my wife she interrupts..."I don't need to know all the details, just simplify it for me" SIMPLIFY?!?!?

Anyone here have tips on explaining the ENORMITY of RED to significant others in a way that they will jump on the train? (Buying RED Jewelry "Bling" won't work for me...not her style)

Aaron,
Tell her it's the Swiss army knife of cameras!

She cuts me off after a few minutes. She just sees the passion in my eyes though, and she knows I'm being pretty serious.
