I have a Sachtler Cine 30 tripod head and I can't get my Red side arms on. I have the bottom plate on the cheese plate and the Sachtler dovetail plate but I still need about 1/4 inch clearance from the head for the arms to fit onto the bottom rail.

Any thoughts on how to overcome this? Is the shoulder dovetail strong and secure enough for everyday mounting on sticks? (That would solve the problem.) Do I need to stack a second cheese plate?

I would not recommend the Shoulder Dovetail, as it's base is quite small to support the RED with many accessories. The best option would be the Arri Baseplate, but that's a bit pricey for some people.

As far as two cheeseplates stacked, I can't say, I haven't tried that.

Well, I actually find the current version of Red Shoulder Mount to be sturdy and stable enough for a everyday light to medium light configuration (mine's fine at 28lbs/12.7kg) on a tripod. If you're using heavy cine lenses, follow focus, production mattebox, downconverters etc, then the shoulder mount is probably looking a bit inadequate.

Have a look at these Allstar threads:

and scroll down the page on this website:

to see picture of "O'Connor" model of Allstar dovetail with a height riser/shim which may give you the clearance you're looking for (perhaps with your Sachtler dovetail plate too).

Clayton,thanks for your recommendation
But I suggest SaturnDog ,if you could make a shim and find longer screws, you can solve it in very low price.Because of Sachtler Cine 30 has its own dovetail,I don`t think you need another dovetail.Making shim is very easy ,just find an aluminum or wood plate and drill some holes , put it between bottom plate and cheese plate, than screw them together.
