Thought the folks here might want a peek at our new SCRATCH box.

Loaded with Intel's new Nehalem architecture and overclocked to 4.2 Ghz.

Mark,

Yep! Dual Quad-core Core i7 pushed to 4.2 Ghz.

We'll post up some ioMeter scores when I get back from Japan.

:w00t:

Very sexy. Are you getting real time 23.98 in max mode?

Emery,

You know about as much as I do! We get the machine in later today from the lab and will put it on ioMeter and then run SCRATCH testing.

I'll post all our results up when they are done.

Are you guys sure this isn't a single socket "Bloomfield" i7 platform?

We've had both the "Nehalem" (dual socket) and "Bloomfield" (single socket) systems in our lab for weeks and I'm pretty sure the Nahalem won't overclock.

But we also have the i7 "Bloomfield" system (overclocked) and it does seem to decode b17 "MAX mode" 4K RC36 clips reliably at 24FPS (1/2 res, high).

Even though it's a single socket quadcore system (with only one CPU), it shows up as 8 cores to the OS and applications via the new intel "Hyperthreading" feature.

You might want to re-check your specs on this new system Torrey.

Dear Torrey,
as Adam has suggested, You should recheck Your spec, about
"DUAL QUAD CORE".

Core i7-965 on 3.2ghz is available now, and it can overclock beyond 4.0 easily.

But...

1. Intel dual socket Nehalem EP based cpus (55xx series), are not yet available for retail sale.
We recieved several "confidental samples" for testing purposes in the past month or so, and info we got is that the retail for cpus is January/February.
Also, fastest current samples are 2.8ghz. We will wait for some more time to see 3.2ghz samples.

2. Motherboards are only for server/workstation, available from Supermicro, Tyan, Intel who make these boards non-overclockable.

3. DDR3 is ECC REG version on 1333/1066, which is also very poor for overclocking, especialy compared to standard DDR3 from OCZ, Kingston, Corsair..., which can go up to 2000 on 1.72V.

4. Looking to Your picture I see a black PCB, with dark Blue and white slot, which most likely shows a desktop board (probably ASUS Rampage Extreme II)

Best Regards

Adam & Orlando,

It seems there was a little bit of confusion at the lab regarding the machine we were getting. The machine pictured is a Skulltrail based QX9775 machine, not the new Nehalem. I think that is still pending a few days.

I did just talk with Larry at Intel (he's down the street at the Folsom Intel facility) and he indicated the platform is capable of, and benefits from, overclocking. He is coming over a little later for a pow-wow on the new tech.

Red User is definitely "In school" !!

Please Spill the beans Mark & Torrey!!!

Blair,

We should have our i7 and board in by mid-week.

Yes--all our systems are liquid cooled.

anybody knows when dual icore7 motherboards and chips would be released next year??? giving us 16 cores..???

Dual socket motherboards with Nehalem Xeons 5500 cpus, will be available for public purchase most likely in February.

An since they are dual socket, with 4core cpus, that means that there will be only 8 cpu cores.
