With the $4500 sensor upgrade, would you get 100fps@5K with a RED ONE?

I recall Jim saying something about the limitations of the board in the Red One meaning it would stay at 4K with probably the same specs concerning resolution vs. frame rates. Quite logical, that's all the data the hardware is capable of dealing with. One never knows though, things ca change, however do remember the sensor of the Red One is physically smaller than the S35 sensor of the Scarlet or Epic.

Cheers,
Damien

Well, if they're gonna have to be sent back to RED anyway to have the sensor replaced, I would not be surprised to see the boards changes out also. I think this would be a logical part of the upgrade "path" to Monstro.

This makes sense.

I would not expect that a 4.5k REDONE upgrade be the same performance as a 10.5k EPIC upgrade.

What would be the point of a sensor upgrade then?

Hmph...

Nobody cares much about this...and nobody wants to really answer.

I'm a bit surprised.

People care, I think, but no one knows the answer... probably not even Red considering they're always advancing forward. Look what happened in just a few weeks since the November announcement.

I wouldn't be surprised if it got high fps and the epic just went even higher. Again, look at Red One month after month.

Hard to get a real sharp "picture" when the subject keeps moving so fast! :)

I'll wait to pass judgement until we get actual specs for the upgrade. Based on the Scarlet and Epic specs, it seems that Mysterium X comes in both a ~5 micron and ~3.2 micron photosite size arrangement. The current Mysterium has 5 micron photosites as well and has a resolution just shy of 5K. It's 4900 wide.

To me, the logical conclusion seems to be that RED One will get the upgraded sensor and will retain all the current formats (and upcoming 4.5K format), frame rates, etc.. But will benefit from the additional dynamic range and faster reset times (less rolling shutter / skew). It also appears from one of Jim's post on 12/3 that a RED One that has been upgraded to Mysterium X is still eligible for the Epic trade-in credit.

I have a hunch that when the time comes, the $4500 upgrade is going to look very appealing to a large number of RED users. It may be just the ticket to give their R1 a little competitive boost while they wait to trade it in on an Epic FF35 or 645 or even continue to hold on to the R1 to see what the Monstro upgrade may bring.

If it were a pointless upgrade, I doubt RED would offer it. I think there is more value in that $4500 upgrade of the R1 than many people care to see right now, as they're blinded by all the cool new announcements.

From a business perspective I would guess it would be better to discontinue making new Redones when the Epic X and Epic S35 come out. I think Red will be having to do allot of work/time to upgrade the R1 Sensor and maybe that's why the don't want to do that again for the Scarlets and Epics?

R1 owners wouldn't be affected with discontinued R1s, since Red will offer newer sensors(at least up to monstro?), great service, and free software builds.

Edit- Red will always take care of their customers, especially their first!

I'm certainly not blinded by the new stuff, but $4500 is nearly half the upgrade to Epic X, and that brings downsampled 5k->4k footage, all nicely anti-aliased, with the, sometimes hollow, bayer image densified.
Its a lot to take in for sure though. Not to mention high-res/high fps.
I'm getting bored of speculating on the upgrade routes, its time to relax.
I've just found out a cable attached to my R1 sensor had come loose (overtime presumably, as it got worse), hence image problems/vertical lines, but should be fixed next week.
Looking forward to shooting with confidence again

Jeff this makes a lot of sense and you have shed light on this for me.

I think the RED ONE single body design is an excellent one. I hope that it is around for at least a few years. It's still very practical and lightweight. I know that RED strives to innovate, but I really like the RED ONE.

It won't be us that makes the camera obsolete but when there are camera's "out there" shooting 5K then that is most likely what clients and markets will demand.

Having an initial investment compete in that arena (because we all know how clients are) for 4.5K is very attractive. If that goes toward EPIC later or does not discount an owner from a future upgrade that would be really generous.

Thanks for all your work on the boards.

David
