Abel Cine Tech has a set of rehoused Leica lenses and they are excellent. Proper cine housings with real markings and gears. All the work was done by Van Dieman in the UK. Top notch and available for rental. We have eight standard primes and three macros. Check 'em out:

These lenses are unfortunately no longer in production, and are extremely difficult to find used.
The Macro lenses are particularly good.
I had a very interesting conversation last week with Christopher at Van Dieman.
I understand that the reason why they stopped making them was because they were hand made by a particular lens maker who unfortunately became very ill.
However he told me that they were considering making the lenses again,as they still have parts, and may have found someone to replace the original craftsman, and they were trying to gauge what the demand would be.
Just to be clear,as Mitch says, these are not your average re-housing job, they are complete re-builds on an equal with anything from Arri/Zeiss and with similar prices.
Anybody who thinks they might be interested in these lenses being made again should email Christopher(Sales@Vandiemen.tv),and express that interest,I'm sure if there's a market he will consider the position.
If anyone knows of any being offered on the used market, please let me know.
Tom.

Leica supplies the glass for Panavision and then they do all their own work from there. This is for sure, I was told by a guy at Panavision Woodland (where the cameras are made) who was actually repairing one as we spoke. Before then I had no clue that Leica made the glass for them, makes sense to me though, mightest well put the best optics into Pana lenses!

Patrick,

I actually got to look at that lens (barry lyndon) when I was at Panavision. It was a rehoused large format zeiss lens. Crazy looking piece of work!

who shoots a film at t0.95? sorry but learn how to light. i am a little tired of going to films that are 50 percent out of focus.

Van Diemen

Van Diemen

I had a bad experience with Van Diemen when they went into receivership in late 2003. In the years since, I have learned that my experience was far from the exception.

I'm going through a very difficult time in business myself at the moment, but I have never refused to return equipment or deposits.

I would advise caution. Check up on what Van Diemen's reputation is now, as opposed to years ago when the made the Leica conversions. Most of the talented engineers left before the reorganization.

Anyone wanting further details should PM me as I would like to avoid making negative posts. I'm only doing this because I'd hate to see more people getting burned.
