Hello, I am new to the board. I will be 1st AC on a RED shoot this weekend; I have never used this camera before.

I was wondering if someone could point me in the direction of some common RED One problems/issues with answers so I know how to solve some on set should they arise.

Also, is there a RED One help hotline? What is the best/quickest way to get help with camera issues?

Anything else that you have found helpful or that you think I might find helpful is appreciated as well.

first, Download a manual and print it out before the shoot! (download from www.red.com, support)

tip1,
If you get stuck or mess everything up (ie turn on some false colour view and can't get rid of it etc), there is a "restore factory default" setting.

tip2,
Also, if you want, say a 180 degree shutter, at say 24fps, but then want to shoot something in slowmo using varispeed, but with the same look, change the shutter mode to "relative", and it will adjust the shutter speed to maintain the 180degree shutter (without you having to do any sums)

Camera uses a lot of power - good to keep an eye on the battery level and change batteries when you can - remember: it takes over a minute to get the camera booted up again.

Be sure to set the proper project settings on day one.

Hope you'll get some time with the camera before the actual shoot.

Read and print out the manual that you'll find on red.com/support

Check which firmware the camera has. The focus puller will love the 1:1 function that the newest firmware offers. But it is not yet out of beta.

Backup often, to more than one location, have a good routine for it.

Have fun.

The camera has a "silent" mode for when recording sound.

It actually makes more noise UNTIL you press record (I think its super- cooling the camera, so it can turn the fan off totally during the shot etc).

I only noticed this on my last job, it confused me for a few seconds, but it won't confuse you!

Thanks, this is all good advice. The camera has Build 17 installed, and I will be pulling focus, so that is good to know. I downloaded the Build 17 manual last week and have been perusing it. I will have it on hand on my laptop, and I will now have that menu cheat sheet as well. Silent mode, also good to know. Thanks guys.

However, still no help hotline? Is this board the closest thing to that? I may be posting on here quite a bit tomorrow if so!

Hi Matt,

What are your responsibilities on the shoot?

If you are limited to pulling focus and changing lenses, you'll find the Red identical to film cameras. You should try to pick up an Arctic Butterfly and Loupe to check and clean the sensor.

If you are responsible for setting the camera menus, you have a great deal to learn in a very short period of time. Hope you can get a crash course with an owner/operator before the shoot.

The Red is not terribly complicated, but you could make a costly error.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

Leo, do you mean "clean the sensor", or "clean the OLPF". I thought the sensor was obscured by the OLPF. I haven't cleaned either, but how often do you think it needs doing. The whole idea scares me.. surely you mean OLPF? :detective2:

"Hotline"...:)...That's a good one! Does Sony or Panasonic have a hotline (actually maybe they do...at premium rates [office hours only]...but not for the F23 or F35 )

Seriously though you're right in thinking these boards are the closest thing to a hotline - sometimes you'll get a response to an urgent post in minutes (even quicker than Red Support who can be damned quick themselves). Post in the Red One forum and mark it urgent (it might eventually get moved to Bugs or something but it should at least get some attention before that).

p.s. make friends with the DIT on your first Red shoot...he/she should take care of you.

Yes, of course the sensor is protected, just saying "sensor" as shorthand. You must still take great care when cleaning.

When changing lenses dust is bound to get in there; the Arctic Butterfly is the best way I've found; very gentle, no chemicals, and works perfectly and quickly.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo
