  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Sony 4K projector

So maybe we will be watching 4K movies someday:

I went on a tour of our local AMC this past summer. They had about six brand new Sony 4K projectors.

These have been around for a while now?

Funny thing is, they have no 4K content to show. Right now it is prohibitively expensive to deliver 4K.

I saw a comparison of (I think) this 4K projector of RED footage vs. filmout, and the projected image was so crisp it looked like a video game, I didn't like the look too much. The filmout looked amazing, and the quality of the Sony 4K was amazing, just not as pleasing to my eye as film because the 4K was just too sharp.

Is 70mm too sharp too?

It's weird but it seems to be a case of "horses for courses" - when we projected some Red short films transferred to 35mm over the summer a lot of people liked the softer, grainier look compared to a 2K digital projection of the same material. However a good proportion of the audience actually expressed a preference for the clarity, sharpness and crispness of the digital projection and I couldn't help but notice that most of these people were younger people, most of whom I'd assume were brought up on a diet of computer games & CGI. Out of all the shorts there were also some subject matters that seemed to suit the cleaner, sharper digital projection more than others too.

The movie theatres don't seem to advertise it. I don't think Joe consumer notices.

Imax and 3D do get advertised (though right now they don't differentiate between the various 3D technologies... though I've only ever seen real-D in Toronto).

No, 70mm isn't too sharp that's not the point. Maybe I should say it was too clean, like it was too perfect. I would prefer a 2K projection than a 4K projection I think for this reason. It's only this way because we've been conditioned to think that film is the goal, so whatever looks more filmlike, we think of as 'better.' There's nothing wrong with the 4K, it looks amazing, better than I expected. It just was not as aesthetically pleasing to me as the filmout was.
