  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Big Change...

just like to say...with the addition of snow leopard...and if Apple provides further support for RED...
Mac will be an insane machine for editing :)
though PC has the plus sides of being customizable...everything has its ups and downs...thats life for you

Pro Video Coalition article....

Yes, it's true, you can't please everyone. If RED were to clam up and not make any future product announcements, then we would have a whole different group of people whining about closed doors, no inclination of what products may be around the corner, can't decide what to budget for next year, oh woe is me...

I can't fault the author's opinion. I know a few people frustrated with their RED One purchase and/or experiences. I can't say that I agree with them, but everyone had their own ideals or notion of what the RED One was going to do for them. All I can say is that my camera has been relatively problem free. I've discovered various workflows to get jobs done and the camera itself has turned into far more than I ever planned on when I put down my deposit money. ...I just want that upgraded audio board! :innocent:

Oh, and what does the article's title about vouchers being canceled even have to do with the article? When I first read the headline, I thought I was going to read yet another rant about how the R1 is now obsolete and no full credit trade-in provision toward Scarlet or some BS like that.

Anonymuse - dude (?) - use your money somewhere else if you don't like the product or the conditions surrounding the use of it. Why use your time here to bitch about a product you obviously don't want in the first place. Invest your money in a company you like or a product you can afford and respect that not everyone share your opinion (thank god!).

It is refreshing to see a passionate Mac-PC duel in 2008 ! feels like early 90s
....and ..... in a thread called "Big Change" !!

I vote for IRIX

I like Irix too... Unfortunately, it got voted off the island several years ago.

Actually, this is really a sign of the times...a guy having to justify his big-ticket Sony purchase over a RED...how much has changed in 18 months...

Yep. Other than the dynamic range comparison, everything he faults the RED for can be applied to the F35. The only real saving grace for the F35 is you don't have all those indie filmmakers out there gobbling them up, trying to self-operate ENG style. And that comes down to the cost of using one, let alone trying to buy into an F35 system.

I'll be interested in Mr. Mulligan's point of view after RED post has evolved for another year or so and the FF35 EPIC is shipping. He may sing a different tune then. But I doubt he will ever regret his FF35 purchase, no reason to. If he has the work load to justify its purchase in the first place, then I'm sure it will ROI itself before the next generation of cameras from RED, Sony, Arri, etc.. are released... right?

:) I would hate to have that guy defending me in a murder trial.... I would lose for sure.

I don't want to argue on people's opinions. They're entitled to whatever they want to think, but the actual measured resolutions of the F900, Viper, F23, F35 are all < 1.920k, compared to actual measured resolution of the RED One at 3.2k.

None of them sub-sample down to 2k from something higher.

I'm only posting this to see if I can bait Zak into another tirade, that last one was so great...bring it!

If you don't know about the difference (I bet lots of people don't!) you will be convince by what this guys was saying. I have to give him that. On the other end? What 5K chip? if it's a 5K chip why we got short change to a 2K output? What a loads of c**p! And did he mentioned the price? I heard that's a 250K camera and when it first came out - The Sony people didn't know what to do with it. Rental only or what? Can anyone confirm this? I think it really is a joke ...

Someone buying a RED is not newsworthy because it's a common event. Common events are not newsworthy. It's only newsworthy to hear of someone dropping "how much?" on a F35 because it's such a rare and un-common event. Make of that what you will.

RED has released an outstanding product that has changed the industry. It has been a work in progress and it would never be what it is today (maybe not even released at all) if it weren't for the changes that were allowed, many championed by the early adopters.

The first Film Cameras went through the same process long long ago. When something is this groundbreaking, there needs to be room to grow. The Camera functions better than almost any first generation product, and yet RED still is releasing free upgrades. But somehow, a small number of people are trying to make that sound like a bad thing. Sorry, but I question their motive.

The RED ONE Camera is still being worked on, and will continue to be.

The new announcements show a commitment to the customers and do not demand ANY down payments.

Where do they get their information?

I suggest anyone reading that article to take it with a grain of salt.

Then take the experiences of filmmakers such as Steven Soderbergh, Rodney Charters, Peter Jackson, Mark Neveldine, Brian Taylor, Alex Proyas, Simon Duggan, and others before listening to this ill-informed or politically motivated piece.

No company is perfect. RED has learned a lot and adjusted for their customers needs several times, and never charged anything extra. They also have admitted that they are still learning and have a lot yet to do.

I challenge you to find another company so generous and fair.

The point is that RED has made an incredible product and this is just the beginning.

Here are a few projects that have been shot with RED that you will be seeing in the coming year.

Big Change...?

It still seems everyone is still pretty clueless as to what the 'Big Change is"

Maybe its a NEW DEAL for customers or a RESTRUCTURING of the company, i.e. RED is split into different divisions handling different aspects of their products. For example a cinematic service wing for RED One and a different division for the Scarlet based products and something again special for EPIC?

Any clues?

You realize that you are being exploited if they only pay you that kind of money, right?
Unless you're only doing a shoot, no editing whatsoever that's a rediculously low price.

At least the weddings I've filmed when I was the grand old age of 18 started at 7.00 in the AM and lasted until 1.00 in the following AM. That's an 18 hour workday, just to get the footage. Capturing and editing added at least two or three days, so now you're working almost five days for $700? Only when you're 15.

Your right, but I live in West Virginia (please no jokes) and it's not very technology oriented. But at the same time, I usually don't have that many hours on the actual wedding day itself, but I do also do half the editing. I figure that I get around $18 an hour. That beats anything any of my classmates are doing. I love what i'm doing and I'm not having to flip burgers. But yes, I admit I'm not making a large amount in the big scheme of things, but for a kid in high school, you cant beat it. I deff plan on getting away from weddings when I get out of high school tho!! Can't wait to go to film school and get into the big leagues!

It sounds to me like this Dan Mulligan guy has a personal vendetta against RED for some reason or another. Very rarely do I read an industry article were the whole bit is solely directed towards a "the other company is worth dog poop".

It looks to me like a very sneaky "paid advertisement" hidden in the form of an article...I know Sony...I used to work with them......
