  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Nikon-to-PL adaptor?

my concern with this is FFD. If this was all you needed I would think someone
else would have done it before. I would love to test it though.

I've used these before. It turns every lens into a macro because the lens is so far out in front of where it would normally be mounted (about a full inch). But for macro work it is great.

judging by the picture it looks like you could make a Nikon-To-PL such that the Nikon portion is flush to the PL tabs (unlike this one where it rises up another cm or so). That should reduce the impact.

As it is now, how bad is it on the macro? whats maximum focus distance?

This has come up a couple of times. For normal work it is unusable, f you set the lens to infinty, you still can only focus from a couple of inches away. Only usable for macro work. I have a adapter like this and only us it for that, no way it will work for normal work.

An inch?

If Arri ffd is 52mm and Nikon is 46.5mm thats only 5.5mm differences which is about .220 inches.

I looked into making a Nikon to PL adapter a while back and did a lot of testing. I had a very skilled optician with me on the project and he cut some glasses and helped me figuring out what kind of lenses I'd need. But after testing this on my camera I decided that it wasn't worth the effort.

To mount a Nikon lens onto a PL-mount camera would mean that you'd have to extend the backfocus on the lens by inserting an optical element (or two) at the back of the lens. It is possible to do it, but not without also changing the length of the lens - which in turn would change an 18mm into a ~25mm lens.

Another issue is to deliver great image quality with many different lenses. That would require super high quality optics - costing a lot.

So I scratched the project and decided to use the 5 minutes it takes me to swap mounts on the camera.
