this inquiry is probably not a difficult thing to answer--the problem is probably more my inability to articulate how to ask.

so i am a film student - i just shot a spec commercial last weekend using the Red. --its my first time dealing with Red footage.

i wanted to hand off the footage to an editor/friend to cut for me, but they are only equipped with a mbp and fcp 5.

i wanted to transfer the raw files into an offline format they can edit easily on their mbp, and just receive the cut, and i would then take care of the rest.
they have an avid at work, and will consider using it if convenient enough.

is there an option to transfer the raw files into anything smaller than the prores 422 for offline editing? they dont care about the video quality for the edit so actually smaller files to work with, the better--just as long as it doesnt affect the online process.
maybe also files for the avid--maybe the prores 422 will be fine on that.

if this helps, here is some info on my personal hardware, project info, final output:

project info:
spec commercial - 30 sec & 60 sec

footage info:
24 fps is 4k
48k at 3k
**i think at 2:1--they suggested 2:1, even though i want 16x9 final output**

final output destination:
festivals & for HDTVs

my personal hardware:
mbp 2.16ghz, 2g ram, 1tb G-raid external drive, fcp 6.05
mac pro 2.8ghz, 10g ram, stock video card, fcp 6.05

editor's hardware:
personal mbp 2.16, 2g ram, fcp 5
work - avid

sorry everyone if this is a lame inquiry--i rarely deal with anything tech and am just starting to get myself in the know--
ive looked around the forum through many threads and other sites like creative cow--but either i cannot translate the information or i havent yet found the info im looking for.

thanks yall!

Get used to it, Film Student. Things are much more complicated now than they were even a year ago. No more handing your film off to the lab and getting a commercial handed back to you. Everyone is now involved in post, whether we like it or not. You are doing the right thing by asking here. Good luck.

You can download free software from RED to transcode the footage. You can also use the software to give the footage a 1-light grade to make it look how you like.

go to www.red.com/support and download RedCine for Mac.

Load up the clips, select your framerate, output size, make the clips look how you like and export them.

If you want something even more automated, download RedRushes, which comes with Red Alert. This will allow you to quickly dump the clips out without worrying about grade.

Red has provided us with some great tools to make life easier.

Best of luck.

I'd suggest DVCProHD for offlining on that MBP as well, made with a first-light by RedAlert and Redrushes on your MacPro.

But apart from that, what do they teach you as film students? Mine get detailed courses on Red post-pro…

Just to add to Nomads post. If you going to export using RedAlert - I highly recommend clipfinder, it integrates with RedAlert allowing to preview your clips and even load xmls for round tripping.

Pro Video coalition has some vids on working with the red as well so have a look. Not sure if it will help with your problem though.

i found the JPG2000 for offline is the fastest way, so long is the quilty not so importent.
