  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Any plans for the USB port besides powering my personal fan?

Hi guys,

There was a lot of speculation awhile ago about using the R1 USB port for camera control, etc. from a laptop. Any plans?

Michael

As an underwater housing manufacturer AND user I would like to have control of things like frame rate, shutters speeds, iso and such that are hard to get to inside the housing with physical controls.

Doesn't seem that hard as essentially you are just issuing the same type of commands that you issue when you press the buttons, except through the interface. If RED would release the interface/command structure I can get a circuit board made that would allow us to easily do those things.

Help Mr. RED!!!

The flat connector has power. The square connector does not.

Please send me a P.M if you have a specific use case for future USB-2 functions.

Besides offering a convenient place to charge your iPhone, I have long hoped you could be able to plug in a USB keyboard as an emergency replacement for a broken joystick!

I heard of a shoot just last week that was nearly lost due to a broken joystick. Surely the geniuses at Red could write some simple code to emulate the camera controls over USB.

Agreed. Seems like a perfect fit.
All menus and camera controls accessed via USB, please.
Cheers,
Harry

Atheros kernel mod for camera control over wifi?
Maybe let the camera los on the net doing all sort of fun stuff :)

Wireless streaming of metadata (and /i data) over WiFi USB dongle (and an app to grab that information) :)

Automatic upload of frames from camera via FTP over 3G connection via USB dongle? The possibilities are virtually endless.

i liked the Fan idea, could save alot of lulu-palmtree-leaf-girls if RED made a USB-based RED-Fan for the luxorious fotographers :)

A few month ago Jim posted a pic of a RED with an attached coffee maker. Never heard about that again.

I guess he got sidetracked with all that digital video stuff.

Camera control and low-res video streaming over WiFi, is a magical combination, and at the top of my feature-which list ...just behind REDline for linux :)

I had an encounter with a bad joystick the other day. Certainly no joy... an usb keyboard should do just fine.

Spare joystick is 25$ at Red... got 4 of them after spending a day without one. it was a nightmare.

I use the USB port to but a simple articulate lamp for laptop. Very nice during night shooting.

Which is fine as long as the joystick knob is all you have broken.

A readily-available alternate control method would be a shoot-saver in many circumstances.

It appears that Red runs a *nix operating system, so adding USB keyboard drivers should be at most a single day's project for one of their geniuses.
