Has anyone had trouble using the new FCP plugin after making adjustments to footage in Red Alert.

All of my color, exposure, etc. corrections I made previously, (thinking I'd have to render each shot individually) are not showing up when I use the log and transfer on FCP.

Anyone else experienced this or know what to do?

Hello Christian

all Presets you save in RedAlert (except of some settings) will show up in the L&T-Window of FCP. You could use it to define a look in RA and take this preset for L&T.

Take a deep look in the WhitePaper which comes with the plugin, it may solves some surprise.

Ciao
Antonio

From the WhitePaper:

To export image-processing presets from RED ALERT! to use in Final Cut Pro:

1. Open RED ALERT!, and choose File > Open R3D to open a REDcode media file to use to create your preset.
2. Use the controls at the left of the RED ALERT! window to adjust the image in order to create the look you want.
3. When you’re finished, choose File > Save Preset.
4. Open the following directory to save the .rlx file into: /Library/Application Support/REDAlert/Presets
5. Click Save.

The next time you open Final Cut Pro, you’ll be able to choose your custom image processing preference from the Action pop-up menu of the Log and Transfer window.

Note – The Curves, Gamma Space, Color Space, OLPF Compensation, and Denoise settings in RED ALERT! are ignored when exporting image-processing presets.

fcp and red alert presets

fcp and red alert presets

Hi Christian and Antonio

We have the same problem with the Red-Alert presets / importing QT into finalcut.

Finalcut doesn't show any difference between the files wich were imported with or without a red alert preset.

For me it looks like a bug. So if anybody knows a solution. You are welcome!

OS 10.5.5
QT 7.5.5
FCP 6.0.5
RedAlert 3.60

So, we can assume that the advanced denoising, and OLPF compensation is basically bypassed when L&T into FCP and then Color? Doing tests from RedAlert shows a significantly cleaner and sharper 2K image when I export with OLPF and chroma denoise on maximum than off. I'm doing native L&T going to Color. The color plugin neither allows OLPF nor denoise settings. Also how do I set debayer quality to full for rendering from Color (the system prefs pane is only for playback right?), that also is not shown in the color RED tab?

Note – The Curves, Gamma Space, Color Space, OLPF Compensation, and Denoise settings in RED ALERT! are ignored when exporting image-processing presets.

This is very important. If you shoot REC709 but change it to say REDspace in REDAlert and find that it looks better and you decide to do your grade in a gamma/color space other than what you shot in, those changes will not be seen by Log and Transfer. This is a huge problem and we hope that Apple or REDAlert (not sure which program is causing the problem) will fix this soon.

Do we know if these things are bugs (I assume they are) or cold hard technical limitations?

Ideally we should be able to reattach redalert settings to the L&T'ed proxies even when they're in FCP as FCP is still grabbing image bits from the R3D files. Having settings pseudo-baked-in until Color (where gamma and colorspace are again editable) is non-ideal.

My question is slightly different, and that is that using the Red FCS native workflow, we never have a way of configuring the OLPF comp & denoise settings anywhere in the chain. As these substantially improve image quality, I'm curious what they are set at when we render out of color?

EDIT: Settings in Color does allows debayer quality to be set.
