I think this is huge. Western Digital has released a device called the WD TV. It's a $100 set top box with a very simple concept: it takes input from USB (thumbdrive, harddrives, flash via adapters, etc) and then outputs it up to 1080p resolution out an HDMI port to a TV! It even has a remote control! (Disclaimer: I know this was released a few weeks ago and other blogs are talking about it, but I couldnt find any threads here on Reduser and how it applies to us)

Think through this, this would be ULTIMATE dailies device. Amazon even has it for $99. You just have the DIT make 1k, 720p or 1080p h264 files and dump then on any USB drive and bam, you can watch them all on any TV or projector system that takes HDMI.

Plus, distribution. Now we could walk into any theater that has a projector taking HDMI (and alternately if they dont, a blackmagic device converting HDMI to whatever format the projector wants) and you can now screen 1080p material anywhere.

I ordered one on Amazon for $99, I'll report back on how it goes.

These specs sound great:
Video: MPEG1/2/4, WMV9, AVI (MPEG4, Xvid, AVC), H.264, MKV, MOV (MPEG4, H.264)

My question is about the details: I would assume it's not compatible with every possible sub-format among those listed above just because there are so very many options in resolution, encoder level, multiplexing type etc. Will look forward to hearing how it works in practice.

I'm using my PS3 for this very task at the moment, and it is very picky about media formats. It will do some H.264 (in .mp4 files) but not every one, and it will not do any kind of quicktime MOV file that I've tried.

anyone actually have one/bought one?

I'd like to hear what it's actually like to use.

Hmmmm... just ordered one. I'll report back as well. I, like jbeale, have been using a PS3 for this but these specs list AVI (and playlists)? As I say, I'll report back. Regardless, a seemingly great product for the money. Thank you Shawn.

Got it today! I took one of my 6 minute Red shorts and did a high quality h264 on my mac and pitched it on a USB drive. I then connected the WDTV via HDMI out to video and RCA audio out. It plays flawlessly! Its freakin awesome to see my Red footage 1080p on my home LCD.

Great find Shawn, thanks. I'll buy more than one for sure, too.

looks like its no longer under $100 :(
