  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Does the new RED FCP update allow for Full DeBayer renders out of Color?

I've read elsewhere that it will only render out Half DeBayer, which would mean I'd be better off rendering DPX out of RA, RR, RC to get best Full DeBayer quality.

I think it's half because it's 2K, where I imagine you don't benefit from full.

If you want 4K your only option is to use RC, RA or Scratch.

I'm looking to render Full DeBayer at 2k resolution (downcovert) which you can do in RC, RA & RR.
Takes longer than half but I know I'm getting maximum quality.

In most situations there isn't much visible difference (if any). But I'd like to have that option too, since at least one kind of footage needs it desperately: low-light shooting with longer exposure times. You'll see lots of white pixels with half debayer in that which go away with a full-debayer (yes, I did a new black-shading).
So, Red/Apple, pretty pleeeeaaaase: May we have that option? Would be nice for 3K too…

I don't mind 2k delivery, but I'd like to scale/debayer/crop/track/key/whatever from 4k, like I can with dpx-/tiff-sequnences and quicktimes.. If you throw a 4k quicktime at color, it imports, but you have to re-frame/scale it in the geometry room.

From my (so far limited) testing, I have seen that I will use my old workflow when noise is an issue, possibly in most lowlight cases, and when I need to reframe.

What it looks like to me is happening is that in the proxy settings in Color 'half' is equivalent to 'half-medium' in Redcine, and 'full' is equivalent to 'half-high', but this is just my guess. This is probably adequate for many purposes, although ironically I do not find it works for SD finishing in Color, as I think the GPU based scaling in the geometry room is not acceptable quality as you get a lot of aliasing with a 2k to SD scale. I have found it is best to grade at 2k, then down-convert that to SD in eg Shake for the best result. That is of course time consuming though.

Hi
roryhinds check at system pref. there is little red icon

It renders in three different ways:

2k is rendered as 2k, full demosaic
4k is previewed as 2k fast
4k is rendered as 2k half demosaic, which does the demosaic from the 4k data to a 2k output in one single step, so it's faster than doing a full demosaic followed by a downsample with practically as good quality.

Thanks. But why can we not have access to the full 4k image?
(No real complaint or grumpyness, just out of curiousity)
Color handles "too big" images from stills and .mov's

I guess there is, but why can we not ourself have a "framing/resizing" room, like we can in Scratch? (Yep. I KNOW the price difference... :) )

It is solveable, right now through the DPX route. I know... :)

But if you'd like to keep the data RAW untill scaling.

Is this how the SDK works?

No, it's not to do with the SDK. It's just that's how it works in Color.

If I compared 2K DPXs from 4K full debayer and native R3Ds in Color, I have same result. But I had to set Exposure to 0.0 otherwise native R3Ds were overexposed.

I used REDLog and CameraRGB settings.

Here's to hoping that with all the "zillion megapixel" REDs in the pipeline that Apple will come up with an "infinite workspace" (like in shake) that will allow us to work at any resolution in FCP and Color.

So can you zoom into the 4K material and then correct that section in Color? Or in other words crop part of the 4K frame and get full resolution of that cropped area and use color? So if I wanted to go into the middle 2048x1024 and color correct only that and export only that could I at the full 1:1 resolution from the original 4K?

Nope. That's my problem understanding why. But Graeme is right:
That's how it works...

...for now @ least.

... so when's that Adboe plugin ready? :)
