Happy to report that the Red One beat out the iPod in a cold weather shoot. Low temperature during filming was about 22º F with wind chill bringing it down to 15-20º. The iPod, which was being used for timecode reference for this music video, shut down after 6 takes. It had been fully charged and even when we used the battery extension pack, the cold weather proved to be too tough for it. Meanwhile, the Red ran continuously for several hours without a complaint. The only issue of the day was I got some internal reflections from filters in Mattebox. I couldn't see it in the LCD or viewfinder. Found out when I brought it back to studio. It's a subtle reflection but still bothers me. I have to make sure to seal the RR mattebox better next time. But that had nothing to do with the cold or the Red for that matter.

Good news... how about that?

Jim

good point....i have the RR as well....some light leakage in there

I'll have to test the Red in some real cold this winter....-45 or so.....:shifty:

Temperature down to -25 Celsius (!) for 3 weeks.

No problems with my Red.

Jochen

huh,,, -25C? that's about when we start putting on t-shirts up here(northern sweden)... Harr!... Haven't relied on fluffy caps the last four years... Harr!... :)

And really... go beyond -20C and it all just feels the same...;)

joking aside... The wind chill effect that seems apparent in that expedition isn't exactly what I would play around with. Things like this should be on the tech-spec-sheets... "Red One, Won't stop working just because your iPod does."

And I always enjoy kicking the iPod brand :sarcasm:

Are you guys doing anything in particular for keeping warm? Portabrace or similar cover? Fan off the whole time? Did you use the bag method for outdoor-indoor moves? Glad to see its holding up. I'll be in single digits next week. Crossing fingers

I'd did nothing to protect the Red from the elements. We had hand warmers, but those were for the crew. Granted, I didn't expose the camera to single digits or below zero, but it was damn cold. Cables had that rigid, feels like they're going to crack way about them. I can also say that Red outlasted me, as I was ready to give in as the sun went down and the temps dropped even more.

Ouch, i can feel the pain...

Been shooting in -8 F in central Alaska for the past few days. Only problem is the EVF giving me unviewable color banding and very noisy shadows. Switched to RED LCD and no problems so far. The EVF issue could well be unrelated to the weather, reloading Build 17 on RED tech advise. Will let you all know of the outcome.

Actually, I did have this problem too. The green, noisy shadows on the EVF. But I was using Red LCD for most of the day, so this didn't impact me. I didn't think it was weather related on the EVF though. I think this is a known issue.

Weird...
Was it a "classic" or a nano?
I had my nano playing all the time at -36C.
Haven't tried my RED One though.
Jim if I stick it in the freezer overnight does that void the warranty? (joking)
no, actually I am curious.

The iPod would play music, but it would fail when I went to play the video slate I made for the music video for reference timecode. It worked for about 6 takes, and then it would start to play the video and then shutdown. What I think was happening is that the cold was draining the batteries and when the iPod needed to do something that required the backlight a bit more such as video, it just didn't have the juice to do it. I used a battery expansion pack with fresh batteries and same thing. Once it warmed up in car after the shoot, it went back to normal.

This is a 40GB Video iPod.

Edit: Actually it's a 30GB iPod, sorry.

22F and the iPod is failing? Sounds like there's something wrong with the iPod. Maybe that little HDD is starting to wear down.

Haven't got my RED into serious cold yet... Soon I will. It's just been so unseasonably warm here lately.

looks like Josch is confirming that -25C works OK. That's about as cold as I go in for. Once it hits -15F (-26C) I go home. ;) I've been out in colder plenty of times and it's just not that fun...

Jeff, I can confirm that my iPod is playing back just fine right now. In fact, shows battery is full and I haven't charged it since having it out that day. I think the cold was messing with it.

If anyone wants to test this, make sure to play video, as that seems to be what triggered the failure. Music played fine. Although I only tested in short bursts. I suppose that the wind chill could have been bringing the temps down further than I realized. But it was not in the negative numbers by any means.
