  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

hi graeme, now with the r3d support in fcp and color, can we expect some new filters/plug ins regarding the r3d files and fcs2?

Like? The purpose of a lot of my plugins was to fix inadequacies in existing video cameras...

hehe good answer...i was thinking more of fixing inadequacies in fcp & Color.-but guess thats apples problem.

anyway i am glad that this workflow is here

If I could fix stuff like that I'd be helping Apple rather than helping Jim. In testing I used this workflow quite a bit and it was pretty darn good. Here's some example I did with it. Please don't kill my server....

It was quick, easy and painless. I used my Advanced Plugins for Color to do some tonal manipulations - none of the "fix it" plugins were necessary, which is nice. I remember back in the day trying to fix up some HDV to make it gradable, and that was a right pain.

You could make a plugin for dumbing-down RED footage to look like crappy interlaced video...

Forgive me.

But seriously. Years from now, it'll probably be difficult to get that crappy interlaced-TV-reality look.

What are we gonna do then, if we actually need that look for a project?

Greame do you have a really good noisereduction plugin for color ? specially for low light red material ?

I do have a "digital compression" plugin in FCP that will make the image look like it's gone through an over-compressed DCT block based codec and push the image into macroblocks. You could use that for the "HDV" "MPEG2" type look. There's one in there for chroma dot crawl too... For that analogue look. Yummy.

As for NR, you can always try the smart denoise in Color.

Graeme

Speaking of Nattress plugins.... what would be appropriate starting point settings for your G-sharpen plugin for Color when using RED 2k files? Thanks Graeme...thanks and keep up the good work!

Not really tried it, but can look at making up some good looking render trees tomorrow and see what works well on my footage.

Whoa, this is one of the best turn tables they are; is it yours Graeme?
Love the close ups !

Yes, that's how I listen to music at home. It's a great deck and arm. Shot on the 18-50 utilizing it's macro capabilities, using natural light and a Brute9 LED light.

Graeme

I never thought of showing a turn table as a sample, neither, brilliant.
I should try with my LP12 and LVII Ittok one day (Ittok is made my father by the way).

By the way, Graeme, what is the best way to remove moire on Color with RED footage?

Email me about your moire issue - I'd have to see the R3D that is causing it to find a good solution for you.

Graeme

I can only second that Graeme's plug-ins for Color are still very useful for getting particular looks.
If you aren't happy with his denoiser, try DE:Noise or the denoiser from the CHV Repair Collection in FCP, but expect huge rendering times. They can repair some seriously noisy stuff, though, but you may get artefacts on moving objects sometimes.

And about artefacts: there's Damage for FCP which is doing a pretty good job to ruin your beautfuly footage from RED…

Great, you're prepared for everything then.
