  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Just tested some Color renders from an FCP timeline made of wraped QT, and the renders from Color are far more dark than what was displayed in Color while grading.

I am afraid this is another stroke from that bloody gamma issue.

Anyone else having the same results?:waaa:

I got the same gamma shift problems in Color. I have tried copy/paste-ing grades from previews projects (QT 422 2K from RedCine, graded in Color for TV ad) with new R3D support. If you look in RedCine for color settings and manualy reapply them in Color's new RED tab you get THE SAME look. But really more detailed an picture look on eye for 1/3 more sharp and crispy. Gourgeos!
BUT:It doesn't work correctly with rendering and saving still images. That is a BIG issue how to get it right way out of Color. If you even save in Color's Still Store room and compare it with same QT rendered and with same grade applied shot it will look different.

I will try in next days with DPX, Cineon, AJA,... render settings, and if will not work I think making "home made LUT" as primary out preset in Color, that you can eye match on proper monitor. It might be a solution, but for sure not quality one.

OK... I have learned out if you render "AJA Kona 10-bit RGB Codec" than you get a gamma shift. If you use Uncompressed, Apple ProResHQ, DPX or Cineon render options you get fantastic resolute.

I have used this color/gamma settings in RED tab: Gamma:REDspace, Color space: REDspace

I am not seeing this on my end, maybe you have a lut applied that you do not know about....I did two render tests, on just using primary in and one adding a grade in primary out and they are very close (the blacks look a touch darker, but not much) There is a reset output lut option in color, maybe that will help.

I have tried rendering in DPX, and its 100% same picture as in color. OK... I get It why. Color is a tool that works perfect with DPX, and I assume it need to render other (Quicktime) codecs as some conversion, witch is not quite good. AJA DPX to QT translation doesn't make any change from DPX to AJA RGB codec. So I will finish stuff like this, till I don't buy GlueTools to re-conform DPX in FCP.

any one now for batch AJA DPX to QT translation script? TNX!

Try to turn on Enabled in RED tab in Primary room.

When I turned it off, Color worked fine, but rendered ProRes files were dark. When I enabled RED tab, ProRes files were OK.

OK. Had my first couple of minutes with the RED-Color thingy.

In color the Image looks far to bright compared to what the waveform shows.... At first.

Could that be it?

In that case, it's a case of a LUT.

Also, when re-opening a color-project, it seems made from proxies, it seems to get a bit confused as to ins and outs...

But image quality working like this, seems far superior to... well... most I've seen actually...

Would really like to have controll over the de-bayering quality and re-framing before downscaling to 2k...

Also, it seems the settings in the RED-room is easily forgotten...

Disclaimer - this is just after a couple of minutes of playing.

Really like some of the options - have to say.

Spend the day ingesting various files in FCP (proxys, WQT, ProRes from clipfinder) and I have render it to Prores, 10bit, and DPX, and I get those silly gamma shift EVERYTIME.

I'm mad because what I see while grading in Color is sooo nice, I get really frustrated to be unable to output it correctly.

Emmanuel,

Just in case you have not tried this, under the file menu at the top there is a function that says clear display LUT. Maybe that will help. Bummer the files still look dark, I do not see that here, but will see if I can find a way to make it happen (maybe not all the red room parameters are working properly) Lastly if you are exposing over 100 IRE then there is a setting in the project settings that says broadcast safe, this would make it look darker on output then you saw because you were looking at it too bright (not saying you did this, just looking at options...) And of course if going to television it is a good idea to leave this setting on.

good luck

It's stupid. We can finally grade in Color, picture is great, but gamma shits are just frustrating. I will make LUT, or Primary out preset, to handle it, but this is not a great solution. Can guys from Red, or anyone else make us proper calculated LUTs (not on our own eye matching) for rendering all the codecs and formats (DPX, AJA, Uncompressed, ProRes, Cineon).

Thanks guys,

I did try the clear diplay LUT thing, I gess I'm gonna try to create a LUT or a Primary out preset.

I do hope someone at RED is looking into this.

EXACT SAME SCENARIO/FRUSTRATION HERE EMMANUEL. When I grade things exactly the way I want them in Color and then send it back to FCP it is too dark. Exported QT is the same. I love this workflow so I really hope there is a viable solution. HELP!

If anyone comes up with a Primary Out Preset that fixes this as a workaround please post your settings so the rest of us can reduce our stress level until this is fixed.

I compared the same image in Color to the one sent back to FCP side by side and the FCP one is obviously darker. Monitor, Color, FCP, QT are all set to 2.2 gamma. Waveform and all scopes MATCH between FCP and Color but what I'm seeing on the Color display matches the scopes whereas the display in FCP has crushed blacks.

I've tried controlling the LUT on Blackmagic Multibridge Pro and that worked fairly well, but since I don't have scope and stuff, it's nothing in the near to provide to anyone. I was quite surprised with how much I had to push the list and the gain.
