Has anyone used the Zoom Telephoto Zoom-Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8 ED AF-D ?? I have been looking at a number of different 200mm zooms for shooting field sports and this is the lens that I always come back to. The price is incredible for it's capabilities but I was wondering if anyone had used it??

It's right at $900.00 new.

This Nikon mount thing is the bomb. Want lens....buy it.

Lee, optically it's a great performer. I have an earlier version of this lens (pump zoom) that I've used on shoots with great results. On a recent shoot, the version you show was rented by the DoP...and was unusable due to the shaky focus...any movement of the focus ring resulted in unacceptable shake of the image. I attribute this to the fact that it was a mishandled, badly maintained rental unit. My lens doesn't have this problem at all. I would just double-check this before buying.

We have this lens and have been using it with great success on our Red since March. The image does shift when you first touch the focus ring, but I've been told that it's due to the design of the lens and is unavoidable. I believe there was a discussion about this on the boards here some months back. As long as it's used as a variable prime, this lens performs (optically) very well. In regards to CA, the only place our lens has a problem is at the very long end when it's all the way open, as soon as you stop down there is no issue. All in all, it's a wonderful lens, especially at this price.

80-200mm is cheap ($900) and wise choice to have in your kit

Can it be used in a matte box or does the lens "grow" in length when it zooms?
