Anyone else notice a light leak in the Nikon Mount?

Hi all,

Just wrapped a feature in Puerto Rico and notice my footage was getting "flashed" by something during daylit exteriors. My assistant passed his hand over the base of the mounted Nikon lens and the "flashing" went away. Turns out there is a light leak at the spring lever of the Nikon mount I bought directly from Doug Underdahl.

Anyone else noticing this? Any thoughts how to seal that up?

Michael

You're talking about the aperture screw correct?

I haven't noticed this issue yet with mine. But it was a concern I had before I tested the mount with Doug. We didn't see this problem.

I'll have to try and test this next time I'm out in daylight.

Michael,
We must have crossed paths in Puerto rico as I was on my way to Tobago with your jib to shoot stock footage on the red.
I'm shooting all nikon mount on my zeiss zf collection - love the lenses but wish that I had a few more zooms. I'm not seeing any light leaks but I'm using the Red nikon mount, not Doug's. I do wish that the mount was better constructed though as a focus pull on the 100mm will move the lense in it's mount.
Any advice for the humidity?
Lets get together I get back and thanks for the porta-jib.
Shane.

Shane, the new mount is rock solid. Your lenses will not move.

Michael, I just flew back from Puerto Rico last Thursday myself, after 21 days of mayhem. Had I known you were there, I would've tried to hook up. Maybe next time.

Where you on the "Men Who Stare at Goats" crew?

BTW... never had the light leak issue with the Underdahl Nikon G/DX mod mount. And I did test it specifically for light leaks.

Well, I made all the mounts, so . . .

If you are getting a light leak around the spring area, then the mount somehow got away from me without my doing the final step to seal it. Send it back and I will fix it, turn it around in one day. And sorry about that.

If you are in the midst of a shoot and can't stand the down time, then a piece of tape over the spring lever will block the light temporarily (you probably already did this).

Steve - Mike's not talking about the aperture screw. Never had a leak there. (Also, how's by you? I almost got a chance to look at the first edit of the Ferrara footage last week).

If you feel your lenses are loose in the mount, try installing the rubber bushings. I believe that you can request these from RED and they send them out to you for free, along with a link to the video which shows the install (easy).[/I]

Doug, I had Red installed the bushings. They worked fine for 4-8 weeks. Now the mount is loose again.

Do we have to keep installing new bushings to get this thing like a rock or is my mount just faulty?

Ah, okay the spring release. Never had a problem with that either.

I'd be curious to see that edit. There were some characters for sure.

Doug's a good guy. This is an example of where it is better to talk to the person you bought from before starting a thread. If that doesn't pan out or if it does and you want to just let people know about the possibility, that's cool.

Did you install 2 or 3 bushings?

Check to make sure they are still under the spring tabs and haven't fallen out.

Doug, many thanks. I'll send it to you when I return to the states this week. What address? I used a duvyteen shroud about the lens system to get by. I've never had rubber bushings but am using AI-s lenses that all seem tight enough.

Tico. Sorry to have missed you. I was working on a micro-budget shoot on Culebra Island.

1Dog, not insult to Doug intended. I expected he would respond as well. This is a good place to raise the issue if others are experiencing it.

Thanks all,

Michael
