I'm on a shoot today and they are using anamorphic lenses with Build 18. I've read a few threads about this but nothing definitive. I cannot view the footage in Redcine or use the QT proxies. I also cannot export any quicktimes from RedAlert! The only thing I can export is DPX or Tiff sequences (And that only works on one of my machines which is using Tiger compared to the other on Leopard with a later release of Quicktime).

I've suggested shooting 4K with build 17 but they are adamant that using the new anamorphic mode is what they want to go with for the ease of shooting.

My question is, is there an ETA on the new QT codec or Redcine to support the anamorphic mode? They don't think they'll be editing the footage for a couple of weeks so I guess they might be ok. Otherwise they'll be using Tiff or DPX sequences!

Thanks
Paul

You can transcode in the new RR which in the output tab has a 2x de-squeeze option under fit width that when selected will allow you to render the anamorphic footage out with proper de-squeeze and letterbox. This should solve their editing prblems for now.
I was working with Deanen to get this issue resolved the other night so there should be a new QT codec out soon to resolve the proxies issue. Just needs the bugs worked out but it will work soon. REDCINE will require an update to import the build 18 footage without crashing it which I'm sure will be released soon as well.

Hi Mike, Forgot to add, Red Rushes doesn't work either. I'm guessing it's the setup on the machine. The main one I'm using isn't mine or Sonic Films. I came onboard as DIT and we didn't supply gear. Seems like compatibility with the anamorphic footage varies wildly from machine to machine.

I'll keep trying and see if I can get something to work. Thanks for your reply though. Much appreciated.

Redrushes doesn't work either. I got called in last minute as a DIT, we didn't supply any gear so as such I had no time to prep for the shoot. The laptop that was supplied has Tiger and QT 7.3.1. I cannot output anything on RedRushes using this mac.

However I just tried my own laptop which is a new macbookpro with leopard and the latest QT and it has infact worked now. The Tiger laptop's reference QT's appear green whereas the leopard's appear blotchy and all over shop. Could just be a difference between quicktime versions though. It'd appear that the later version is better when using anamorphic mode in camera along with RedRushes.

This will work fine for their post needs, so thanks very much Mike.

Cheers
Paul

RED Alert!

RED Alert!

Did you download the latest RED Alert! from the RED tech support site?

Yes I updated the Tiger one to no avail. Then updated my own for good measure. The Tiger with QT 7.3.1 doesn't work, the leopard with QT 7.5.5 does. I haven't tried updating the tigers quicktime version as yet since I was under the impression 7.5.5 doesn't work so well with Tiger and the mac isn't mine as such I don't want to go screwing around with it too much. Having said that I suppose they can revert back to an earlier copy of QT on that mac? It's been a while since I messed with the different versions.

I'm just trying to catch up with converting the files to qt's at the moment so if I get the chance I'll have a look if a newer QT version works.

Paul

Ok so i just tried RR on the tiger mac with QT 7.3.1 and I get a single white frame as my outputted quicktime. With QT 7.5.5 I get a single black frame. Looks like it's maybe a Tiger issue with anamorphic files?

Paul

Get on the Leopard Paul. The Tiger is dead.

Haha... I'm all over the leopard Mark... Figuratively speaking :)

I'm on my own macbook with leopard and it's working fine with RR now (I brought it on the off chance). Problem is that the laptop supplied with the camera is Tiger and I'm only on for today and it's a seven day shoot so they have no way of converting the rest of the footage over the rest of the week.

I'll be interested to see how Scratch handles the footage. I presume it'll have the same reaction as Redcine though. I'll test in the morning.

Paul, Waiting for your test on Scratch - Lim

Are you rendering to prores and is FCP installed?

Yes I was rendering to prores and no the supplied mac doesn't have FCP, my own (The one that works) does though. Would that make a big difference then Deanan?

Yeah, it means that the prores encoder is not installed (the free apple one is just the decoder) and you'll just get black movies.

The QT components are in /Library/Quicktime if you want to check.

Ah ok - makes sense, you learn something new every day! Thanks Deanan

So just to recap, what's the best way of dealing with Build 18 footage right now? RedRushes?

We had the same problem and rolled back to B16 just so we could get the Anamorphic framing B16 offers (and so we could review the footage on set). However we have a number of shots on B18.

I understand why they didn't want to roll back to 17. It would have made framing extremely difficult.

One other thing. The footage we did get up in Red Alert appeared cropped.

B18 anamorphic does not work in QT or RC. QT should be out tomorrow.
RA/RR/RL does support it.

anamorphic mode in B18 only records the 1.2:1 area (slightly larger than 1.2 actually).

Would that be the area that was denoted by the box frame in B16 4K ana or is it smaller? And the entire area you see desqueezed on the monitor is what you should get, right?

right and right.

sorry guys, this is maybe an hold question , but i can't find the answer...
