Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)
I am assuming, and hopefully accurately, that there is no trade-in timeframe?
Not speaking for RED, but if Jim didn't specifically say there was a timeframe, I'm going to assume there isn't one. The offer is nice. At any point, upgrade your sensor or get a 12% cut on a scarlet - or as you're asking, trade in for Epic. They make $ regardless, and their original customers benefit.
I wondered this as well, but I'm pleased.
Alas - what I DO wonder, is if there is indeed a plan for RED ONE to upgrade to Monstro, although I do believe he has said before that there will be (in response to me, even). However, I am also curious if the 5k EPIC S35 will be able to upgrade to Monstro as well. I assume so, but that's not actually been spoken... I'm going to hope this is possible until told otherwise, though. 13+ stops!
The way it sounded by saying the camera will lock down after a choice is that the upgrade stays with the life of the camera. That way the early users have the option to upgrade and be happy and the incoming Red One users buying used cameras have to make a choice of getting the Red One or the Epic... a choice that early adopter didn't have and are now given the same opportunity.
I think once everyone gets their scarlets and epics, any new Red One buyers won't have the option to upgrade... they have to make the choice at the time of purchase because all 3 will be readily available.
I suppose to truly make obsolescence obsolete one should be allowed to upgrade for the life of the camera - otherwise the camera becomes obsolete - no? Will the generous folks at RED allow the exchange of a damaged or dead Red, I wonder?
Its more likely to be a fixed term from the actual delivery date of a functional camera. You cant expect Red to honour this agreement in ten years time when Epic and scarlets are distant memories.
Yes, on second thought, a free rental for years and years? Considering Red One was made well, "lifetime" of the camera could be a long time. So it may not fair for the upgrade to last the life of the camera.
That's too bad. I don't think I'll ever be able to get enough money for an Epic monstro. And I don't want or have the money to buy a second camera like Scarlett. And a mysterium chip upgrade of just 1 stop probably isn't worth the extra money for me.
